A LIFE ONCE LOST, EPICUREAN, ION VEIN and ARISE AND RUIN COMPLETE LINEUP

Exactly. It draws. And why shouldn't it be represented at powerfest?

Sorry, I don't see metalcore as part of the underground metal community.
I am not knocking anyone for liking it.
Personally, I find it completely false, in the fact that most bands are hardcore bands turned metal to ride the Ozzfest trend.

I said it before. It's a damn shame that longtime and hard working underground US metal bands like Attacker, Manilla Road, Cage, Jag Panzer, etc, etc have to go to Europe for appreciation..

Shit....I always gave Paul and the boys crap, but I see why Novembers Doom don't play many US (let alone Chicago area) gigs these days....

there studio stuff is at least tolerable in some aspects. this might be a blessing in disguise for me to get my less enlightened friends to come with me. if i can sit through most of Ozzfest just to see ozzy for the first time, i can easily and happily sit through those half-decent+ bands to see my favorite band for the first time.

though i get the feeling ill enjoy Saturday all around a bit more:lol:

I always gathered from the brief conversations I have had with Rob both online and in person that he is more into metalcore than most genres these days. As I said, I have no problems with the specific bands themselves. He's a promoter, so he was able to book bands he wanted to see, esp with guaranteed headliners that draw....

It's not a risky choice, since ticket sales will do well regardless.

Maybe these bands will appeal to some....

Though any band just like these ones can be seen any night on a major tour at Pearl Room or House of Blues...

You can't see a band like Twisted Tower Dire, Cage, Agalloch, Nachtmystium, Avenger of Blood, etc every day of the week.
(Not meaning to be specific with these bands, more just as examples of hard working underground US bands)

I know what you mean. Hell, I'm in an underground band! But I try to look at this from the point of veiw of what's best for the fest. I don't think Rob's personal taste in music has anything to do with booking bands, he's smarter than that, kinda.

Dude, I recommended EDEN'S FALL for the local spot!!! :headbang:
The IE and / or Testament crowd would totally dig you guys...

Look, I do understand the business side of things to a degree.
These bands will bring some butts into the Pearl Room that might not otherwise be there....

I just think there are more deserving bands..

Sorry to come down so hard on this..

In all sincerety, I fully appreciate the work that goes into this (And any other) festival....

You're right, it's not part of the underground. But why keep the fest limited to just the underground? Don't you want to see it become something more than that?

Hell yeah man!!! I really appreciated you doing that but we just don't draw and that's the bottom line about it. It sucks but that's the reality of it. When the fest is a success I'm sure there will be a place for bands that can win over a crowd but for now it's not worth the risk.

It's funny, because we actually agree on most of this stuff :headbang:

Wow... Atleast I know to show up extremely late on friday night. As in, when I get a phone call telling me Iced Earth is hitting the stage. I'd go in for Ion Vein (I actually don't mind them), but I'll be damned if I'm going to sit through the rest of that crap.

:puke:

Those bands that are metalcore will draw no one new to this fest. you would have had more people traveling in if you had true metal acts playing. Basically it turned into Sounds oF the Underground Jr. or Headbangers Ball Lite.

It would be a different story if you got larger metalcore acts but you got bands that are not even popular in that genre.

Like I said...if true metal acts were booked...stuff like Avenger of Blood, Twisted Tower Dire or Merciless Death...there would possibly be more traveling people coming in. Most of the Chicago crowd now will just show up before Iced Earth plays and then come even later on saturday.

Like Jason said...there are a lot more deserving bands out there than the ones picked.

Wow, you really need to quit while you're ahead!! :p You could NOT be more wrong with that statement. Yes, there are a few metalcore bands I like, but yet some which you generalizers would consider metalcore, I couldn't disagree more that they're metalcore. ie. BTBAM & TAO are NOT metalcore...sure, they may have elements, but they are not metalcore. For BTBAM, there are equal parts of many styles of metal in their music...and the latest TAO, as I've mentioned before, is like the American version of Scar Symmetry IMO. Plus, they're previous album was as thrash as it gets for the new generation of thrash bands.

And to correct your statement...I am now, and have for a while now, been more into technical death than most other styles. Recently, I've been getting into the new Meshuggah & the latest Daath (not tech death, but still very cool) more than anything...also Darkane actually...not tech death either, but very cool indeed.

As long as the people for A Life Once Lost clear about before Iced Earth, I'll be fine. I swear to fuck I'm gonna jam a mic stand up someones ass if I get punched in the face during Iced Earth though... happens to me too often around here, and part of the reason I travel so much is to avoid the uncomfortable concert situations.

I have a feeling that there may be a few fights this time around dealing with the moron metalcore fans.

Epicurean is NOT metalcore and neither is A Life Once Lost! While they
may have some core-ish vocal elements at times, to write them off
as metalcore is a shame for you because there is some absolutely
killer METAL music happening.

Regarding who are and who aren't deserving bands, and considering where
Rob, John and I are coming from, you've got a lot of fucking nerve to tell
us who is and who isn't, and let's just leave it at that.
