A Plausible Alternative to Censorship?

Teens have every bearing on the topic because that is the item the rating system evolves around

Im not seeing how a NC17 rating stops promotion. Industry can do anything it wants in this country, nothing is stopping them from advertising movies. Unless they are feeling neglected for not being able to use the most extreme clip of a movie as a trailer

I'd have to see clips of cut clips to determine if any film was compromised or simply made more tasteful. Either way success means more funds for the next film.

And film makers are not the problem of parents (dont think we dont wish we had their lifesstyle and freedom) and need not impose their sick tendencies on our youth

I understand everything you said, I dont see any better way of doing it, the current system safeguards theater admission age. Parents should not be responsible to walk their teens to the correct movie, at that time in their life they are trying to allow a degree of freedom and independence, trust is great but reality is better, with this system we can trust them to some degree knowing they cant get into certain material... yet... full fledged adulthood will come soon enough. Some like the idea of a free for all world, others like the idea of people showing some restraint, for this reason things such as ratings are a fair checks and balance system for the two opposed parties.

You seem to have missed the central tenet of this discussion. The teens, as you put it, are extraneous to what we're saying.

What we're really concerned with it the absolute hegemony the ratings system has. As it stands if a Director makes a movie that has some sexual references that upset the MPAA, but perhaps not the target audience for the film, then it can be given a rating that makes advertising very difficult, perhaps affecting the possible audiences for the picture. In order to ensure the audience is profit worthy, the studios will "play ball" with the ratings system and cut the movie to get a "better" rating.

That itself has little to do with teens, only the repercussions of removing the ratings system would raise problems regarding parenting and teenage children. Which even then would only fairly expect some activity on the parents part, and certainly not on the part of the director. Blaming the movie/director for the content of a movie upsetting a child is a typically modern move of the typical modern parent. Take more interest in your child as opposed to letting "pop culture" raise them.

I said nothing about "upsetting a child". As far as good parenting goes, dont talk the talk if you havent walked the walk. No amount of interest will ever over ride "pop culture". Parents dance to the lowest common demominator, there are things out of our control, things like what goes on during sleep overs or in the care of friends parents. One parent doesnt give to shits what their kids watch or do, your kids spends time with them, bam ! you become a strict parent, the enemy of your child. One parent doesnt care if their 14 year old daughter is having sex in the bedroom, friend of your daughter, bam ! your daughter should also be having sex, stand in the way and die, you are a strict parent. Then turn the tables and at times like this... "you need to be the concerned parent" and put all the effort into doing a job that is already being done but someone wants to delete so wealthy film makers can make their mark on "pop culture".

No Im not the one thats missing anything. I went down this road, I was as good and active of a father as there was, I was totally kicked in the ass because all behavior in that grade evolved around what was allowed by the most liberal parents, the rest of us had to fight that influence off, to little avail. Here in lies the Cyper clause, harm was brought to the unwilling.

If a certain degree of sexual or violent content is necessary in a film to meet some directors, script writers or song writers criteria for self expression they can deal with the reality of existing in a world with a population of diverse views on such matters. I refuse to feel sorry for them, they have a good life and are heavily rewarded for their doings, something parents are not.

Now, Einherjar, indicated it had nothing to do with "shock value", and as the benefit of the doubt I will let this go for whatever instances he may be talking about. However you cant tell me that todays pop culture is not all about "shock" and dramatization and that some "artists" dont apply this to their "art".

Good thread EINHERJAR86!

I think with something like movies nc-17 rating and the movie gets no promotion and makes little money they should stop the censorship in every media and have critics write about them in newspapers and online.

ya, it only helps a little bit though, feeding off the rest of the population at school is still the biggest challenge. Those that havent should probably not speculate. My daughter and I were like best friends still in a father/daughter kind of way, her teenage years were still a mega challenge by my standards, but no doubt there were teenagers with far worse problems.

Good for you that you spend time with your daughter.
What do you think is the best age to let a kid watch a rated r movie?

R means all kinds of things, I despise violence and shit attitude, fuck in every other sentence, nudity means nothing. My daughter grew up with similiar characteristics. We are not burbies and going to theaters was not even a thought let alone in the budget. She watched her teen programs, I watched movies, mostly about stuff pertaining to real life or comedies language was not always good but negitive attitude was absent. Movies was never an issue.

What are your favorite movies?Violence in movies can be used right or be done wrong.I think another dumb system is Parental Advisory. It just says it on the cover but tells nothing about it.

razor, what do you think about the fact that nudity often dictates an R rating more than violence or language? That is, if a movie contains nudity or sexuality it usually earns an R; but violence can still pass in a PG-13, sometimes even PG, film.

That a good point right there Einher! If a movie has nudity then it r but if it has violence without blood and gore than it pg-13.
The language part is tough but I know that if it has the f word in it then rated r.What do you think about parental advisory stickers Einher?Just like the MPAA it a waste of time and tells nothing about how it got the sticker.

Yes, I have been bitching about that since the 70's. X ratings should be for gore and violence and leave sex alone, though the thing about X rateing is people know exactly what it indicates. My point then was violence is negetive energy and sex is not. Either way I still dont think yougnsters need to be exposed to either sex or gore or that a parent that works 40 hours a wekk, may have an additional 10 hours or plus into driving, making dinner, cleaning the house, mowing the lawn, fixing the cars... whatever... needs to spend even an additional 2 seconds of their life reviewing media when we have a body of people already doing it for us. Put the locks on the TV and get on with the rest of your life... uninterfered with the infatuations, fetishes and attentions whoring of artistic types hoping to make a name for themselves via shock factor. All things come in their time, nobodies getting robbed... unless they go to the theaters and buy popcorn and soda.

Lonesome Dove probably stands out as one of the pieces of work that connected with who I am. Sadly living in a society of burbies today I have no doubt that most teens or young people would sit like deer in the headlights if forced to watch something pertaining to true grit. Everyone seems clueless how this all came to be.

Not all teens or young adults want to see movies with violence or sex.If I showed them a black and white movies they will all think it boring but if they had to watch a spoof movies that are dumb and horrible than they will like it.Depends on the person movie taste.Like I said violence can be used for the story good or it just violence for the lazzynes of the violence.I think violence is a lot worse than sex but violence can get away in pg-13 movies and a short sex part is rated r.

Well thats OK then, as I recall a X rating was 18 or older. Not that I recall what a plain X rating movie was or if I ever saw one. Was probably some real weak pornography at the drive-ins. Regardless your average R movie today is way extreme compared to 20-30 years ago, blood splattering, sick violent tendencies and using "fuck" every four words. So I would say things are far more leanient today.

Very violent movies have been around for decades but you just don't know it.Try watching Asiain spatter movies and tell me that not violent.Don't forget the grindhouse movies back in the 70s and early 80s which a lot of them have but they weren't mainstream so you don't know them. There was a movie called cannibal holocaust which killed animals for real and this movie came out in 1980.

that was not my point and denying that things are not more radical and agressive today by saying look what was done back then is evasive of reality

There a lot of movies that make saw look like a disney movie but they are mainstream nowadays.Would you have your daughter or son listening to gangsta rap or death metal?

Randy Moss posting in The Philosopher forum? This is gold

I think that movie ratings are fine, but rated R should not have to tone down content, nor be exposed to less advertisement(though the content of the advert itself being regulated is fine). Ratings have a purpose, especially for children, but rated R should be for adults, period, and not dialed back.
