It's about the snare's tonality and the frequencies carved away in the mix to let it cut through. I find that the bass can mask the snare's 'ooomph' in the 200Hz region, if it's too strong there, and the guitars can mask the entire midrange. The way to get past that is to add a ton of high-mid to the snare, which will emphasize the 'crack', and hopefully retain that clarity even after the transients have been chopped with limiting or clipping.
But a good way to chop those transients in the mix and still retain the punch is to clip the snare on its own track... after I started doing that, I had no issues getting it loud enough.
Once again, clips would help.
