a question

Be technical? Does that help?

Well, alot of people tend to associate technicality with speed. But I picture technicality is either an accidental or learnt extreme knowledge of music theory, whether it be atonal or tonal. The knowledge of different scales etc...

That's what I think, but I don't think enough...

Technicality has to do with a band's use of musical theory...

Bands that rely heavily on theory are technical, and bands that play what they think sounds good aren't...

Technical Band-Dream Theater

Not Technical Band-(Okay, Opeth isn't a good example. They don't rely on theory, that's why I put them there.) Okay, a better example of a Nontechnical band is Slipknot...

Look at the difference (instrumentally, not vocally)...

Opeth is pretty technical.

I would say a technical band is one that relies on virtuoso musicians - hard to play songs as opposed to simple riffing.

Death for example - try playing one of those fucking songs off Symbolic as opposed to AC/DC or Metallica (who fucking lick balls on St Anger BTW - worst band ever nowadays)..

Opeth are technical in a non-technical sense. If u get my meaning. Technical bands are called technical because they normally play so fast that the musicians are obviously super human or they play with fucked up polyrhythms and time sigs ect (Meshuggah and Theory In Practice, for example) or they just shred like bitches.

Well thats my interpretation of it anyway. oh and sometimes people tend to think that any band with a bassist that has a bass with more than 5 strings = technical. :erk:

Opeth don't rely on music theory at all. I think its possible to be technical and not proficient at theory. Although it is a lot more difficult to write good music without a theoretical base.
