For quite a while, I've been thinking about that... And I think metalbands members should be protesting more about that image thing...Popular music is about image...and looking good...music is just an excuse... I think that in metal, the image is unnecessary since the music is already good....and I think the make-up was a good and cool way to avoid showing your face and getting useless groupies, but, would showing no pictures be better now since the make-up age seems to be over? Just to get even farther from the mainstream shite!

well, just as much as we must have our own identity, we must base it on what WE believe, and not functionally to what THEY are

but yeah real music doesn't need a good "image" to make it worthwhile, though for ex. Running Wild would probably be just another mediocre band nowadays without the uber great piratey image :-P
but that's cause they've been repeating themselves over the last five years... but i digress

But...the question was: Aren,t the pictures irrelevant? Why would there be a need? Why would one know what they look like, as long as the music is good? Wouldn't it be great to keep the interest on the music, rather than adding the possible interest of the looks?

Graphical Designers must eat too :p

well, in some way or another, people (the crowd of listeners) want to know the person that's doing that great music, they want to know his/her/their history, how he/she/they are inside and out, etc
that's why they always do photoshoots and interviews and all that...
ideally it would be just that, but in general it's always the horny 15 teenagers fantazising about her idol's pictures and all that stupid crap...

but well, serious people want pictures for what i said first, and in that case i don't think there's anything too bad about that

pic are cool cuz they dont show us some session photo but people playing stuff live most of the time.

pic of pop artist been prepared and makeuped and 8-hour long stuff are gay, but it's cool to know who COB are..

Well, as fans we need to have some sort of connection with the bands we enjoy. Pictures are sometimes a good way to do this. I find myself looking at a live picture of, for example, Alexi playing his guitar or Ray Herrera with his drums and think to myself "That's fucking cool, I'm glad and proud to be a metal fan"

Exactly.. To almost every music lover it's important to know who it is that's making the music, so you can get a deeper understanding of it. Why they do certain things, why they write such lyrics and so on..

@ Niniel
If you think that in metal things aren't all about image, you're fucking naïve girl.. I've met several performers through my profession and most aren't at all what they pretend to be. Strong, verocious man like Abbath are pussies in real live. It's just an act they put up.. Peter Steele is shy like hell.
Painting your face is not about scaring away groupies.. You crack me up girl. Painting their faces is all about producing an image of themselves. Those - woehoe I'm true metal and put paint on my face - types are much more about the image than about the music.
Music is a muscians job. They have to sell records to earn a living. That's no different in metal music than in any other musical genre. And good pictures of bands playing live, pictures where you can just feel the atmosphere of the gig is exactly what sells records and tickets..

Well, if my band is ever to be know, I wouldn't want my everyday life to be filled with annoying stalkers... I don't even need to be know this way to have a stalker..lol And, well, I like to think metal is somewhat more about music than the good looks of X's face and the sexy blablabla.... Call me naive if you wish, but I prefer to think what I like is not what I hate.

Wake up and smell the shit!! Most metal dudes are fuckin' ugly!!! :loco:

So, the reason they put their pictures in the booklets, is to make it even more important to buy it for the music and not for the image!!!

Well, I like those pics in the booklets a lot, but it still has to happen that I buy a cd because the bandmembers look "cute".... (especially since I'm not gay!!)

I have to disagree on that!!!! Not all those corpsepaint bands suck!!
Hell, if I were in a band, no matter how good/bad my music would be, I think I would experiment at least once with corpse paint, and if I would like it then I would maybe keep it, but that wouldn't influence my music, it would just be for the fuckin' fun in it.

To be able to do the silliest things and still be able to blame it on the fact that you listen to metal!! (I do that every day!! And people buy that shit  )

Most are indeed...but...well, this is a CoB forum, and if you ask me, many person here seem to think otherwise about those guys...right?!?!?! :loco:

Not that I care that much about that either, but I really do believe the music industry would be better off without performers showing their face...and still, People would still fantasize about Shakira's breasts...
:hypno::Smug::):grin:

Hell, yeah, I'd fuck Shakira if I'd get the chance! But that doesn't mean that I would buy her cd's because I want to!!

Maybe if we really had sex, then I might feel obliged to buy one of her cd's,... :loco:

Actually Anneke and EFF said everything I wanted, but again, Niniel you are just wierd...or lesbian so to say.

I'm not saying I buy an album because the members look good, but If I like their music I also wanna know them. I mean who they are, what they like etc... And of course some of them are handsome, I'm sure for example that a metalfan dude like Angela Gossow for both her looks and her voice... Ppl should just admit such things, it is not something to be ashamed of, like you telling us Niniel

A musician's life is about his/her music and image BOTH! Wat would be CoB without the Reaper? what would be Alexi for us without his lil' angry rabbit image? :)
And you are really wrong Niniel if you think that bands like Immortal or Marduk paint their faces to hide. It is ONLY for the image. I just saw an interview with Legion, he's a real niceguy in backstage, not hiding from anyone...

Open your eyes or smthing

Lol, then again! I know the corpsepaint is not hidding...And no, I ain't lesbian, and, well, I don,t hate the idea of being weird...I am a musician, not a fan...and, I just get bored after a very short while of admiring the face of someone who's just not a part of my direct environment and never will be...I don,t know, but it just gets boring and anyways, *real* guys are much more interesting...really...Just think at the chances we have to meet any of the Bodom crew! lol I might just be some pessimistic dreambreaker, but I don,t waste *love*(if it can be called that) on an image. Though notes and riffs will forever haunt me...

Edit: *real* guys are much more interesting by the simple fact yu might actually get to know them real good....

And...Alexi/Rabbit?????? I don,t get it....
