Absolute Masterpieces of Today

(hopefully) Meshuggah - None, Destroy Erase Improve, Nothing, FUCK I love everything by this band, oh
Frederick Thordendal - Sol Niger Within!! maybe the best thing from the 90's
Nevermore - Politics of Ecstasy, Dreaming Neon Black
Electric Wizard - Return Trip or Dopethrone
Akercocke - Words That Go Unspoken, Deeds That Go Undone (really, any of the last 3 by Akercocke could be one, but this is my favorite)
Opeth - Orchid, My Arms, Your Hearse, or Still Life
Enslaved - ... fuck enslaved is awesome, any/all? Isa was very original, Ruun not as much though,
Primordial - To The Nameless Dead (man, the newest primordial is so fucking amazing)
Neurosis - Through Silver in Blood, A Sun That Never Sets, Given To the Rising
Deathspell Omega - holy fuck, this is a hard choice, ummm Fas? Kenose? SMRC?

sucks though because I'm sure instead of the amazing underground stuff thats around, Dethklok and Shadows Fall/KSE/Lamb of God/crapfest402 are going to be looked back on as classics by most people with sickening reverence and nostalgia

goddamn its hard to call a man gay when he includes primordial in his list.

Muse - Absolution
Arsis - We Are The Nightmare
Dream Theater - Awake
Nevermore - Politics of Ecstasy
Soilwork - Chainheart Machine, A Predator's Protrait
Symphony X - Paradise Lost
Circus Maximus - Isolate
Savatage - Gutter Ballet, Streets
Scar Symmetry - Pitch Black Progress
Necrophagist - Epitaph
Death - Individual Thought Pattern, Human, Symbolic
Freak Kitchen - Dead Soul Man, Move, Appetizer
Opeth - Still Life
Into Eternity - A Scattering of Ashes
Vinnie Moore - Mind's Eye
Queensryche -Operation Mindcrime, Empire, Rage For Order

now the question is, does a fauxhawk result in this taste of music, or does this taste in music result in a fauxhawk!?!?! the fuckin chicken or the egg?!

from that list I agree with

Muse - Absolution (haven't listen to this in a while, but it is a really good album for sure, not metal, but there is probably no band that makes better melodic rock than these guys now. And live they are amazing and play better together than just about every metal band I've seen.

Dream Theater - Awake (I was a complete fanboy from Images to SFAM but can't even sit through anything after that, but definitely Images and Awake can be considered classics)

Nevermore - Politics of Ecstasy

Soilwork - A Predator's Portrait (It is my opinion that no other swedish melodic death metal album fucks with this in terms of pretty much everything, riffs, solos, songwriting, singing, drumming, etc..Soilwork's best work easily)

EDIT: I mean The Odyssey, didn't like Paradise Lost too much, total brain fart.
Symphony X - Paradise Lost (Every band that makes this style of music should have stopped after the Odyssey. Perfection as far as symphonic prog-power is concerned. Even though I have more of a sentimental tie to TDWOT which I bought when it came out in 1997 and played pretty much nothing but that album for 8 months straight, Paradise Lost is more polished and overall a better record.)

Death - Individual Thought Pattern, Human, Symbolic (probably the best string of 3 albums ever in metal)

Opeth - Still Life (commented already, their best work IMO and definitely cemented their sound, which was very refreshing at the time it came out. I remember buying this album and sitting in the parking lot listening to it twice before I left the mall)

Queensryche - Rage For Order (a certified classic, should be in a thread with puppets, somewhere in time, etc)

Off the top of my head right now:

Nevermore - Dreaming Neon Black. I actually get kind of teary eyed when I listen to Dreaming Neon Black.

Necrophagist - Epitaph. Holy shit those riffs are awesome.

That song is too long, its like one of those posts where you notice how small the scroll bar is and just go 'fuck that.' and stop reading

EDIT: Also, since when was Into Eternity all that great? I saw them open for Nevermore and thought they were pretty decent, but when I checked out their myspace is was just generic prog/death with a little diversity on the vocals and shredddddddddder! solos

Buried in Oblivion is amazing and I havent heard an album like it, while apparently they suck live everywhere where I havent seen them, that album is just amazing. Scattering of the Ashes is not though

My personal favorite is "Frames" by Oceansize.
Albums with such perfection don't come by a lot.
I'm sure I'll be playing it years and years and years after
I'll second that

fuck, I forgot Katatonia - Last Fair Deal Gone Down

its the only katatonia I really love, I like brave murder day and dance of december souls, but everything else I don't understand the praise. LFDGD is fucking awesome though, nothing flashy, just great songwriting, beautiful melodies and great vocal performance.
and that

and this

and I'll throw in Disillusion's Back To Times of Splendor. Best metal album ever, period.

I can't even help but throw in my couple of cents. >.>

Metal:
Wintersun
Ayreon - The Human Equation
Nevermore - Politics of Ecstasy
Falconer - Northwind
Insomnium - Above The Weeping World
Amon Amarth - Versus the World
Dark Tranquillity - Character/Fiction

Non Metal:
Jack's Mannequin - Everything in Transit
Dredg - El Cielo
Elliot Minor - Eliot Minor
Neverending White Lights - Act 1: Goodbye Friends of Heavenly bodies/Act II: The Blood and Life Eternal
Rush - Snakes & Arrows
Third Eye Blind - Self Titled/Blue (Simply for Slow Motion<3333)

Oh man, keep it going please! There are tons of bands that I know and some that I don't, but now I want to both re-live those classic albums I've always loved and get my hands on the ones I'm unfamiliar with.

I can not recommend Myrkgrav enough. Even if you hate folk/viking metal, it features some god damn amazing clean vocals. Really original sounding stuff going on, and no filler.

The demo was horrible, other than that he has one album.

The clean vocals in the chorus are my favorite part of the song. You may not like it otherwise.

WELCOME TO THE WORLD OV WORMS

I second The Drift. It's like Peter Gabriel on a bad mescaline trip.

Nose holes
caked
in black
cocaine

Pow! Pow!

No one
holds
a match
to your
skin

No dupe
No chiming

a way
off
miles
off

No needle
through a
glove

Famine is
a tall
tall
tower

a building
left
in the
night

Jesse
are you
listening?

It casts
its ruins
in shadows

under
Memphis
moonlight

Jesse
are you
listening?

Six feet
of
foetus

flung at
sparrows
in the
sky

Put yourself
in my
shoes

A kiss -
- wet -
- muzzle

A clouded
eye

No stars
to flush
it
out

Famine is
a tall
tall
tower

A building
left
in the
night

Jesse
are you
listening?

It casts
its ruins
in shadows

under
Memphis
moonlight

Jesse
are you
listening?

Pow! Pow!

In the dream

I am crawling
around on my
hands and knees
smoothing out
the prairie

All the dents
and the gouges

and the winds
dying down

I lower
my head

press my
ear
to the
prairie

Alive

I'm the
only
one

left
alive

I'm the
only
one

left
alive

I'm the
only
one

left
alive

Alive

I'm the
only
one

left
alive

I'm the
only
one

left
alive

I'm the
only
one

left
alive
