Acoustic Drums for Metal: A Guide

Just a side note If some of you didn't figure this yet...
The phase aligning trick with oh as a reference point will work only with XY pair.
It's interesting sometimes, and sometimes it's not as Oznimbus mentioned.

why would this not work with a spaced pair?

our drummer is making progress tho, he IS capable of laying down tracks that meet my standard, which (altho they're not 100% prefect) isn't an easy thing to do (i'm the guy who's cracking the whip screaming "it's offtime...do it again!!!)

I always bitch on my guitar players when they go offtime. So I think we're pretty much the same, but only play another instrument...
I've tried to put them on a strict dieet of metrnome, but they just wanna play instead of practicing with a metronome getting everything tight...
Hopefully one day they'll learn..but still..they're good guys..in playing and personality..

Because the sounds wont reach the two mics at the same time (except equidistant sources)

so it would work on the snare, if you had the snare as your center point, and both mics were an equal distance from the snare?

Exactly.

awesome

does anyone have any experience recording drums with a presonus firepod? in addition to upgrading mics, i'm hoping my band can get one of these in the next few months

If you know what you're doing, (or practice til you do!) you can get excellent studio-quality recordings with a firepod.
But do the updates to your firepod (on presonus web site), get the new driver, and if you're using XP - fix the Window's Firewire/1394 Service Pack 2 screwup
( see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/885222/en-us - to fix the SP2 default of XP's Firewire speed from 100 back up to 400 mb/sec) and your firepod will perform even better.
You can also ditch the Cubase LE that comes with the firepod if you want a pro quality recording and upgrade to SL or SX.
I have 2 firepods and use them with Cubase SX 3.1.1.944. I usually dial in some VST compression settings on the pre-record channels of the SX mixer. For drums I also do some triggering and mix with DFHS.
For guitars, I prefer POD XT pro routed into the XLR's on the firepod. Sounds better than a USB or spdif in from the POD.

I've tried a few units and the only other one that I like as much as the firepod with comparable quality in that price range is the RME fireface.

Yeah, what Burny said.

Then again, sometimes it sounds better just to mess around with the phase buttons. The key is to experiment.

Yes but conceivably couldn't you still do it if you're not using XY? Couldn't you just create several out-of-phase hat tracks, align them with the various different mic tracks (ie cymbal mics etc) and then process them together to cancel the hats out?

I haven't tried that but I don't see why it wouldn't work.

You won't get exact cancellations, and what will be left won't be pleasant.... that is, if you're trying to cancel out the hats. You're better off closing them up a bit during tracking.

I'll accept the blame for that. Sorry for neglecting the thread, but things are picking up once again & free time is going out the window.

That & I've started recording with spaced pairs (thanks for the advice, Mr. Murphy!), massive overhead rolloff, & all kinds of sidechain action going on. End result: much cleaner drum sound. What this means is I'm going to have to add some stuff to earlier articles & clarify a shitload of stuff.
You know it's a good thread when even the guy writing the guide is learning stuff along the way! :)

Na it's all good Oz, i just figured that you were busy. I'm more surprised that people just stopped disscusing things here, myself included.
Take you time man, we appreciate all the stuff you've helped us with already, and we've also read the thing you've spoken about with James so we know where its all headed hehe.

Hey OZ, i was just wandering about those Remo Falam Slam pads. Do they help/ make a noticable difference in gettnig a proper atttack out of the kick? Is there a difference between the sound of the 2.5' and the 4' pads?

Cheers man.

I think the different sizes are just so that if you have a double pedal you can use one pad for both beaters - if there is a difference in sound, I wouldn't think it was deliberate, or there'd be a greater range of sizes.

Steve

I actually start to love my acoustisch bass drums :) after this whole thread reading and reading..i've been experimenting with my bass drums to record and actually use acoustic..only thing is..to get that click I really need a nice load of compression and proper EQ :)..but after that I've actually got the sweetest kick sound that I've ever worked with...I'll post samples some day soon...

First pics I've ever had of me micing up a metal kit....... All placements/types stayed the same except the floor tom mic got moved closer. Figured I'd put em up to see what anyone thinks...

Cool. Nice looking kit.
I got to looking through the pictures on your website. I know that girl in your pictures named Kera. I am good friends with her boyfriend. I used to play in a band with him in fact. Small world!

Have you guys played in the Evansville Area?
