Hi,
I'm attempting to delve into the area of convolution reverb for the second time this year, and have again come up against the issue I was experiencing last time.
In a nutshell, I'm basically finding that whenever I record using convolution reverb as a substitute for a cabinet, (I'm using Revalver MK II at the moment, but the same goes for other plugins), my guitars end up sounding much like the guitars in the Deftones "Adrenaline" album. I.E. sort of "boxy", "metalic", "cold" sounding. Almost like I'm playing inside a big old metal tube or something. I don't have a sample of my recording at the moment, (cause I'm at work), but if you've ever heard the Deftone's "Adreneline" album, you'll know what I mean.
If I use an "emulation" type plugin instead, (say line6's old pod 2.0, or even the new UX2 with gearbox), I get the warmer, non boxy sound, but of course at the cost of it also sounding too "digital" and toy-ish.
I have heard people get the "warmer" non boxy sound I'm after using convolution... so I'm guessing it might be something like the type of guitar/pickups, etc. I've tried using subtle and not so subtle EQ techniques to get rid of the sound but without success.
Has anyone else noticed/experienced this?
For the record I have a Gary Levinson Blade plugged directly into a toneport ux2, (with all effects turned off... i.e. it's basically acting as a DI box). This is recording directly to sonar using MK II as a plugin.
I'm not looking for a miracle answer here... just some general tips that might point me in the right direction.
Thanks in advance for any help.
