Hey folks, here we go : one of the guitarists from by band, who sold his Engl Powerball recently, has to decide if he moves to an Engl Savage 120 or a Krank Revolution.

He mostly uses an LTD Ec-1000 with 81 pickup in the bridge, he plays in a thrash metal band (think Testament, Exodus, Megadeth, Slayer etc..) and also in one of my bands which is melodeath/metalcore (In Flames, Dark Tranquillity, As I Lay Dying, Killswitch Engage etc.).

The other guitarists in both bands use 5150/6505 amps. The Engl was too fizzy/gainy and didn't match very well.
I know he likes big but defined tones but still needs something with great attack. He is on the Engl side but the Krank interests him too.
He also needs a decent clean sound.
For high gain tones, he uses to add an OD-808 in his rig.

What do you advise him t buy ? The problem is that I just saw that Thomann do not sell Krank anymore. It now becomes tricky to find a dealer in Europe...

I haven´t played the Savage but owned the Krank Rev one. The clean sound is something on this amp you either love or hate.
It´s strange and doesn´t really sound like a tube amp but more solid state. It wasn´t my cup of tea but the distortion sounded good.
It´s not very versatile though. I´m not quite sure if it will fit to thrash metal style but it kills on metalcore-ish stuff. The attack is very very fast.

I haven't played a savage but I have played a Rev Jr and I must say that I have a soft spot for the tightness of them. You can almost dial in as many mids as you want and the attack is still tight. I would definately use on in a thrash band, if I was in one.

Both great amps but one really shouldn't make such a decision without playing/comparing both amps. The Rev has a really pristine clean channel, really "solid-state-y", that I love personally, but the character of the distortion is quite different between these amps.

Sorry to get off topic Sly, but has he tried an Uberschall at all? Given Lasse's recent clips, this amp might be a suitable match for him.

The last Dimmu album was a Savage 120 and Savage SE IIRC.

that album is a perfect example of the Savage tone in my opinion.

SE preamp slaved through Savage power amp, but yeah, fucking ENGL fury all over :headbang: (and it's funny, I usually don't like cabs with front-mounted speakers, but Engl amps seem to be PERFECT matches with them, which might explain why they chose to make their cabs that way!)

And of course, search for Ola/Goddamn Guitar's clips :headbang:
