What do you guys think of this album?

I think it's sweet. Good ol, unpretentious sound, semi-long and wandering song-telling. Lots of accoustic guitar going on; when the distortion turns on, it feels natural, like literally, there's something pristine, fresh, and invigorating about it. PF is a classic, in my mind.

Excellent album, naturalist themes have become common in many subgenres of metal, but Agalloch pulls off that dark forest atmosphere with the most success IMO. I too prefer The Mantle, but the fragile beauty of songs like The Melancholy Spirit and Hallways Of Enchanted Ebony always put me in a deep trance.

The majority of Pale Folklore I enjoy listening besides the odd strangely played solos. Refreshing semi-black metal, although they sound a bit too American to be convincing, for me. I'm not sure if they are, but judging from the lyrics and some subtle things in the music I can't exactly put to words, I think yeah. I haven't heard the mantle yet.

I prefer PF far away and more than Mantle. Actuallly, I haven't gotten very warm toward the latter. The music in Mantle is immobile and verges on the monotonous, whereas PF has got more energy to it, it breaks dynamically and breathes more and, to my taste, it's less folksy accoustic than Mantle overall, which makes it more enjoyable for a person searching for the instances of metal in their metal music. PF is also a bit more diverse; the tracks in the other album don't sound very distinct at all.

Btw, Agalloch are American. I forget which State.

<3 Agalloch (aga-lock). I agree with Xtokalon that Pale Folklore is the stronger album. To quote Chedsey, The Mantle does sometimes feel like you're takin' a stroll through Dullsville. Still dece though.
Can't wait for the Nest split. Should have it this week if I's lucky...

Ah! I put it on the first a, as in ága-lock.

But what do I know? I'm French. Though as far as Frenchmen are concerned, I'm pretty good at figuring out where accents should be.
