I haven't heard Empyrium yet, but all 4 of their full-lengths are on the way. I'll vote here in a month or so, but I suspect that it will probably be Agalloch.

Thing about Empyrium is that you're dealing with something quite drastically different on their first two albums + demo.

Agalloch are consistent across all their releases in comparison.

Perhaps I should have done an album vote, e.g. Pale Folklore vs. Songs of Moors... but nevertheless, this thread was going to happen sooner or later!!

Although I love both bands, Empyrium definetly gets my vote. Although overall I think Pale Folklore is better than any one Empyrium record.

I canNOT choose between the two, but I think if I had to I'd go with Empyrium, just for the more varied work. Actually scratch that, as perfectly beautiful as many Agalloch moments are, Empyrium have two clear highlights of music and art in general: the violins of Waldpoesie and the title track vocals of Where at Night the Wood Grouse Plays. Empyrium.

You have no idea about the WMD coming your way. :tickled:

Like many others here I hold Empyrium in the highest regard and consider Misty Fields a masterpiece and Weiland one of the most depressing albums ever, but they are up against fucking Agalloch, and I worship almost every second of their entire recorded output.

Tough one, but I'll go for Empyrium without that much hesitation, they create a grand and stunningly beautiful image of nature in both their music and lyrics.
Agalloch feel a bit emo at times which really bothers me ;/

"Agalloch by fucking miles"?

Wow, that was easy! As good as Agalloch is, I find it near-impossible to be that dismissive over Empyrium. They are in the same class, at minimum.

Still, let's see where the next Agalloch record goes. For now, I still cannot vote, but I'm leaning towards Empyrium for "Mourners" and the reasons NAD listed....

i love empyrium. but if i had to choose a favorite album, i'd probably go with 'a wintersunset'... tight, passionate, and enthusiastic... these guys knew what they were doing. too bad they had to call it quits.

i hate to say this because it sounds disrespectful, but...
empyrium > agalloch
