Nearing the end of the year and I reckon it's about time we made our lists. I'd be interested to see what you guys thought the 10 best albums were this year.

1. Insomnium - Above the Weeping World (and pretty much every other album this year by far!)
2. Envy - Insomniac doze
3. Decapitated - Organic Hallucinosis
4. Mercenary - The Hours That Remain (so underated)
5. Ihsahn - The Adversary
6. Mastodon - Blood Mountain
7. All Shall Perish - The Price of Existence
8. Converge - No Heroes
9. Amon Amarth - With Oden on Our Side
10. To-mera - Transcendetal

This year had no Godless Endeavor, Character or Annhilation of the wicked, but constant and great releases did spew forth from all directions of the globe. We did have offerings from some classic deathmetal bands, but however good they were (stench of redemption, Kill, Suffocation) they weren't list worthy in my eyes.

1. Keep of Kalessin - Armada
2. Mastodon - Blood Mountain
3. Satyricon - Now, Diabolical
4. Moonspell - Memorial
5. Gadget - The Funeral March
6. Vader - Impressions in Blood
7. My Dying Bride - The Line of Deathless Kings
8. Cradle of Filth - Thornography (yeah, yeah, I know, but theyve got Ville, so go fuck yourselves :D - this record is really well done, and the lyrics are superb).

Thats all for now, Ill think of the two remaining later.

not quantity but quality is what counts - so here my list ...even if shorter than yours

1. Moonspell - Memorial
2. Madder Mortem - Desiderata
3. Katatonia - the Great Cold Distance
4. Draconian - The Burning Halo
5. Lacuna Coil - Karmacode
6. In Flames - Come Clarity
7. L'âme Immortelle - Auf deine Schwingen

@mardy: i've edited my post to remember you on Desiderata - did you forget them or not your top 8? :p

1. Tool - 10,000 Days
2. Katatonia - The Great Cold Distance
3. Mastodon - Blood Mountain
4. In Flames - Come Clarity
5. Solefald - Black For Death - An Icelandic Odyssey Part II

well we have november and theres a album of the year thread...what do you do if new candidates for the list are gonna appear the next month and a half??(edit)
anyway nice lists.@garv, envy is great, good choice. I try to get their older albums but its a hard job.
here are my favs so far. lots of my favorite bands did good and new albums in 2006. great year for music...(2007 is DT back in command)and I discovered totaly unknown bands to me like Thrice, Envy, Rise Against and finally updated my Dredg Discography

1.Thrice-Vheissu(Ok came out in 2005 but I discovered them in 2006 and Vheissu is such an masterpiece)
2.Isis-In the absence of truth
3.Deftones-Saturday Night Wrist
4.Solefald-Black for Death
5.Cult of Luna-Somewhere along the highway
6.Woven Hand-Mosaic
7.In Flames-Come Clarity
8.The Legion of Doom-Incorporated
9.Converge-No Heroes
10.Jesu-Silver
11.Rise Against-The sufferer and the witness
12.Blind Guardian-A twist in the myth

havent bought the new mastodon yet

RHCP - Stadium Arcadium

close follow-ups
In Flames - Come Clarity
Iron Maiden - A Matter of Life and Death
MUSE - Black Holes and Revelations
My Chemical Romance - Welcome to the Black Parade

Mastodon was getting quite some coverage in the press, but I never liked them so much... should go back may be. Same for Lamb of God, Stone Sour... and Evanescence (even though they rocked the charts, I don't fucking care at all - one good song a record doesn't make it up for all the fuss).

Disappointment of thh year: new Killswitch Engage. Papa Roach was weaker than ever.

And I think lostprophets blew it with their new album, which I had hopes for :(

Waiting for: new Incubus.

Disappointment of thh year: new Killswitch Engage.

Never liked them to begin with. They're the only band I've ever seen over 3/4 of a crowd walk out on. (At the DT show in NJ in '02 - didn't walk out for good, just until IF came on after them, then everyone walked back in.) It didn't help that they thought the coolest thing in the world was starting every song with horrible feedback.

I'm makin a top 5 cuz I'm not listening to a lot of bands...

5. Eternal Tears Of Sorrow - Before The Bleeding Sun
4. Insomnium - Above The Weeping World
3. In Flames - Come Clarity
2. Norther - Till Death Unites Us
1. Kalmah - The Black Waltz

I forgot katatonia from my list. It should probably be in there somewhere. There's alot of bands too numerous to mention, and I keep forgetting them too. My honourable mentions go out to Sikth -death of a dead day and Kalmah too.

@Plinny: ... Joking right? Just making sure. :)

I actually forgot to mention Taking Back Sunday :D

Nah, it's kinda my hit-parade or something - I don't follow metal scene, I track what I like or being fed from the media (for the record - I don't watch TV, it finds it's ways). Well, except a few bands I follow for about a decade now.

Stadium Arcadium is THE album.

Top 3 I'm thinking will be

Insomnium- Above the Weeping World
Agalloch- Ashes Against the Grain

and three will be either

Saturnus- Veronika Decides to Die
Amorphis- Eclipse

or somethin else. Gotta check :)
