I will never understand why this album is widely dismissed as mediocre, it is so blatantly fantastic to me. It flags a bit in the middle with Fast to Madness/Hall of the King and the Barbara Ann cover is an abomination, but other than that it's a 10/10. Banish From Sanctuary is basically the best song ever, Damned for All Time/title track/Beyond the Ice/Valhalla are all amazing.

That SDG album is so good. I'm just a bit annoyed that the Obtained Enslavement cover and the final track drag it down a bit. The cover isn't bad, but totally unnecessary and the final track is just a bit bland.

While I believe that Somewhere Far Beyond is the triumphant pinnacle of their power/speed era, that album is impeccably written and easily second best.

A lot of people seem to think this album is just a tired facsimile of Voivod's old style, an insincere "return to the roots" à la Death Magnetic. I strongly disagree. I feel like they've integrated the more straightforward, upbeat, almost hard-rocky style of their 00s output with the weirdness of their 80s material and the end result really clicks with me. It's not as vital as their classic work nor as tight as the Post Society EP but god damn it's still fucking good. It's amazing to me how strong this band is still going three fucking decades into their career even after losing their most indispensable member.

Very well said. I think its just as good, if not better than Post Society though.
