What albums do you think would appeal to ALL fans of metal. Not necessarily to the point where everyone would rush out and buy it, but albums that may garner RESPECT for what they are, regardless of your genre preference.

And yes, I said genre. :loco:

How about:

Queensryche - Operation Mindcrime
Bruce Dickinson - The Chemical Wedding
Edge of Sanity - Crimson

There are FEW albums that would appeal to ALL fans of metal. For example i think it would be "normal" that a thrash/death/black metal fan will not like Operation Mindcrime.
Right now i cant think of an album that every metalhead will like. Always some will think that its boring/bad

I doubt that there is one album that every fan of metal likes, but I think the stuff that they would at least respect would pretty much all come from the 80's.

Metallica - at least one from the first 4
Megadeth - Rust in Peace or Peace Sells
Slayer - anything up until 1990
Motorhead - something
Iron Maiden - something

I think a lot of metal people would dislike EoS - Crimson, but they are certainly foolish. :loco:

I dislike all of those. I don't think there is any one album that appeals to ALL metal fans, that's close to impossible, I think.
No, you misunderstand. I'm talking about albums that would be acknowledged as something of an achievement, regardless of whether you would listen to it or not.

I don't listen to Mozart every day, but my god, I can appreciate the skill/talent/gift that he had in his concertos.

Same with Pink Floyd's "The Wall". It is an astounding effort, but I would definitely pick "Wish you were here" first.

I know that some people would dislike the style of, say, "Crimson", but is there anyone who could say it isn't well orchestrated or well written?

I think something from Black Sabbath's early Ozzy days or some of Metallica's early albums are about as close as you'll get.

Yeah, Black Sabbath is a good one.

As a fan of metal, who can deny songs like "Children of the Grave" or "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath"? I mean, at that point, it all becomes primeval and instinctual. It is the roots of everything that every metal fan should *appreciate*.

Not a close-minded metal fan (Henrikmain this not directed at you, you're perfectly entitled to dislike it) who might think the prog and quiet elements are "pussy bullshit" or something.

Case in point, on the way up north last week, buddy and I listening to Kyuss and it just blew his mind. I said "I wish I would've gotten into these dudes earlier," and he said "not me, I would've said 'this shit's too slow it sucks!' 10 years ago." He was a big thrash and nothing much else fan back then.

Hmm, I don't think my point is coming across, but I speak of the ANYTHING JUST PLAY IT LOUD, OKAY!!! mentality, if that makes sense. :Spin:

No, I get you NAD. I think it's all about music appreciation right? I mean, even outside of metal, there is music that I can totally respect but just may not listen to it. So I don't see why this couldn't apply inside the realms of metal.

Honestly, can a fan of metal say that they either don't like, or cannot appreciate, Black Sabbath?

Everyone after Sabbath -- e.g. Priest, Motorhead, Maiden, Metallica, Queensryche, Bathory, Death, etc etc -- has room for debate. But can there be debate around Sabbath?

I hope not. You don't have to love Sabbath, but it is kinda weird if a metal fan doesn't. It'd be like saying "yeah I'm so metal I drink magma and shit chains, I just hate the electric guitar!"

Albums by Iron Maiden and the other classic 80's metal stalwarts are rather obvious answers... yet I have metal friends that don't like the obvious metal classics like Iron Maiden. I think these newer albums could potentially appeal to at least most metal fans... although I assume most people on this board probably hate them anyways:

Nevermore - "Dreaming Neon Black"
Symphony X - "The Odyssey"
Evergrey - "In Search of Truth"
Mercenary - "Everblack" (although the use of 50 percent harsh vocals may be hard to stomach for the clean-vocal-only crowd)
ARK - "Burn the Sun"

I'm a Muslim, but I refute the existence of Muhammad! :loco:

Nevermore - "Dreaming Neon Black" - LIKE
Symphony X - "The Odyssey" - REALLY LIKE
Evergrey - "In Search of Truth" - REALLY LIKE
Mercenary - "Everblack" - LIKE
ARK - "Burn the Sun" - Never heard it, I think I might have it laying about somewhere though...should I dig it out?

Yeah, definately... it's one of my personal favorites. It's just one of those great rockin' albums with good songwriting, catchy hooks and sharp musicianship. Many people say the vocalist sounds like David Coverdale... but I don't think it's too overt. Basically, this album has a sound that is at once forward-thinking yet comfortably classic. It definately has a throwback feel... but it's still cutting edge. So that's why I think it should have a broad appeal.

Cool.

You reminded me too how much I like Mercenary. I hear their new one is even better. When I first heard Mercenary, I thought, yeah, this is how I wish Nevermore sounded.

Bruce Dickinson - The Chemical Wedding
This is an excellent choice... and I think it may have an even wider potential appeal than Iron Maiden... because "The Chemical Wedding" sounds more modern... whereas some newer metal fans may not like the 80's sound of Iron Maiden.
