hey guys,

First time posting. I'm a "do it yourself" home hobbyist working on my own album. I've got 11 songs recorded, and loosely mixed and am working with some vocalists to lay some stuff down. One of them will be coming over on the weekend for a couple tracks to see how it mixes.

I'm here because I'm looking for feedback from metalheads, and not generic production people. All songs are original, and mine. This is my first move into production but it's been a lot of fun and rewarding to record my own stuff!

I'll take feedback on clarity, mud, tone, drums, song flow comments and general metalhead feedback about the material in general. Anything and everything.

here's a link to 3 different songs, one is Slower, one is more technical, and one is more groove oriented. If you want to hear more or even better want to take a stab at writing and performing vocals we can talk.

I know you guys use dropbox, but I've got my stuff hosted already through box.net and it's a similar service.

Enjoy! :headbang:

http://www.box.net/shared/cm03tugeps - More straight Deathmetal
http://www.box.net/shared/ydo8falcmx - Slower, Amon Amarth melodic
http://www.box.net/shared/rtp6et7yxv - In between

thanks guys

It's an equalizer that removes frequencies below a certain point and above a certain point. Settings for what you're looking for is around 80Hz and 12000Hz. If you want a free VST, try ReaEQ.

Ah ok, so basically remove those frequencies from the guitars - I actually boosted on the main channel all the lower frequencies to give the tracks more balls, otherwise the whole thing sounded kind of... thin for a metal recording.

Thanks for the tip I'll mess with it

rchoi54 - holding off on the mastering and whatnot until I have some vocals to mix in as well.

Awkward frequencies? Interesting I didn't hear any - I've got some EQ stuff going on using Electri-Q, and doing a little nudge in the 3000 to 4000 range as well. What in particular is awkward about it? It might be stuff I'm adding rather than taking away.

The chain is guitar -> Pod 2 -> Soundcard, if that even qualifies as a chain.

not even, it sounds like the guitar is only coming out of 100HZ and 2000HZ and nothing else.

how did you record them?

Straight into my Lambda external soundcard with 1/4 guitar cables from my Pod 2.0. No micing, just raw digital signal. Once I had the signal I used the "Heavy Guitar II" preset on Electir-Q VST, and messed with some VST Dynamic stuff to limit and compress a bit. On top of the Electric-Q stuff I also gave the guitars their own boost in separate ranges. Left guitar is boosted 3.0db at 3808hz and right guitar 3.0 at 2705hz.

The Electri-Q one focuses more on boosting around the 100hz range through 10000 and clips off the ends of the spectrum.

Not sure if any of that info is something you're looking for :heh:

Also, same guitar, different settings on the Pod per guitar so they mesh without sounding identical

hm a pitty - I like the songs, especially the 2nd and the 3rd one, but the guitars sound like EQed-to-death :/
they put some pressure on my ears via headphones, kind of gives me a headache
maybe if you just post the guitars i could take a look at it
cheers

Do you mean straight raw data no EQ or anything on them? I could do that

EDIT: http://www.box.net/shared/qc4sn05i8r - this is the guitars for one of them, just both guitars no EQ or anything on them, I cranked the master volume up so they'd be a little louder but have at them.

Also thanks for the feedback on liking the songs :)
