I'm currently using the C3 multiband free plugin to compress the low mids in my guitars but I can't get it to sound right for the moment, it just seems to kill the sound.
Any cheaper alternative to Waves C4 ? I'm on a Mac and can run VST, AU, RTAS... plugs

The reaXcomp, I thinks it's called is free and works great. I can't remember where I got it from though, try googling around and see if you find anything.

+1.... i think it's better than C4 itself:

- have many bands you want (it's scary)
- Attack, Release, Knee, Threshold and Ratio for each band (i never knew another multiband so complete)

I not even know why people use C4 when ReaXcomp exists.....

As usual the big difference between top plugs and the free alternatives is that waves have put in far more time into the GUI. It's just easier to see whats going on with c4
