America is actually pretty bad-ass.

Generals standing hundred yards behind the lines is pretty stupid in the first place. First, if you want to direct orders, you have to be pretty close of your troops, otherwise, the message will get to them too late. Second, a general close to its troops might boost the morales of the infantry, always useful.

I think it would be a little bit more of a morale killer/stupid if your general was killed. That is why there is a chain of command. Once a battle starts the general really isn't going to be giving troop-level commands, so standing in range of the fight is pretty stupid.

Dude, this isn't Warhammer 40k, you don't want your general anywhere near small arms fire or infantry bombardment.

Haha, I was gonna say something similar.

err I was more referring to the Roman Empire era. When Julius Ceasar was about to lose his fight against Gaul, he standed in the middle of the battle to throw commands and boost the morale.

edit: nerds, the 2 of you

Wtf? Got a link? I would'nt think Ceasar would be that fucking stupid, but I may just have a romanticized view of his military leadership.

hold on, looking for the link

edit: still didn't find the link on the internet, but I watched an historic tv show this weekend about the battle, and they clearly said that Cesar was in the middle of the battle, stop being a smartass.

I wish I payed more attention to American history in highschool. I used to think it was so boring, now it interests me a lot. I guess my Dad is finally influencing me, haha, he is obsessed with American history.

Haha, I believe you, I'm not being a smartass, that just seems like a pretty stupid move for an Emperor to make.

Yeah cuz a geocities site HAS to be factual [/smartass]
hmm, what was written there matched the content of tv show I watched. They both mention that Vercengetorix surrenders and that Cesar brings him to Rome, small details that prove the accuracy

those who want to "feel" how war was done during the Roman Empire Era I highly suggest trying out "Rome: Total War" which is highly accurate military wise. They also tried to put as much as historical events as possible, like the military reform of Marius Gaius, but they had to do so so it remains a "game", which means that you don't have as much micromanagement as you would like. But, they took the time to give Greeks the phalanx, the triarii for the romans, the noble cavalry for the barbarians, the sacred charge band for Carthage, etc.

It is very interesting, actually. Luckily I grew up in a state with a cool history and not in some boring state that the US bought.

The Civil War and then the rugged Old West times are very interesting. Once America started getting into the Industrial Revolution, I begin losing interest.

Well, yeah, I could see Julius Caesar riding around in the thick of the fight, cause he didn't have to worry about some hotshot kid with a sniper rifle popping his head like a dropped melon. And even the "Civilized" roman Empire still put some emphasis on personal skill at arms as a qualification for a general. Different times. But by the time of the Civil War? Fuck no, you get your tubby muttonchop-wearing chief of staff THE FUCK AWAY from cannon fire.

you mean the gettysburg with jeff daniels as the guy from Maine? Pretty awesome movie. I've been to gettysburg. great place to visit. We have lots of sites here in TN too. Chattanooga is one of my faves
Gettysburg is so spooky as fuck, especially at the bloody angle. Even I, as a Massachusetts patriot, have to marvel at the courage/stubbornness of the Insurrectionists as they executed the hilariously stupid but brave Pickett's charge, which wasn't really a charge, since they walked most of the way across that huge field.
