Hello guys!

I was wondering how Amon Amarth produces "their" sound and stumbled upon various sites that say they're using Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier as well as the H&K TriAmp series. In the Studio diaries they say they're using these Krank Tops (actually, I could say "you" as I saw Johan being around a lot :/ ). So what really is the setup that makes the sound that unique (with focus on the amps and effect pedals/racks)?

Which leads me to my next point. The guitar sounds are indeed very "fat", and I thought of some kind of chorus effect being added on studio albums. The I saw the 3 mic setup in the studio diaries and wonder if this is enough to produce a reasonable stereo guitar sound? In short: Is there any effect added to the guitars in the studios and/or on stage?

I'm not trying to imitate the sound. I was just wondering why I can't get a sound like this out of my equipment. I'm using no effects at all (besides distortion) and a single microphone, so that might be a reason. But I would like to know the original setup for reference. Let say the one of Asator?

Thanks for all your comments!
Daniel

Hi man, i will try to answer to you, i'm french, and my english is fucking weak, i hope you will understand me!!!

I don't want to be pessimist, but they have a fucking great sound and trying to make the same sound without there studio equipement is impossible.

They always used a high gain amp, startly with a dual rectifier (versus the world) then H&K triamps (With oden...), Krankenstein and H&K triamp for Tottg. They actually use Peavey 6505 for the Tottg tour.

I have the 6505 and the Krankenstein, 2 high gain amp(Great amps Btw) and a 4x12 Engl cabinet and it's quite hard to make there massive sound, they have a brütal sound with a lot of medium. I use 2 mics, a Shure SM7 and a Akg C214, i have a great sound but not very precise. For having a good sound like Amon Amarth you need to have a good mic, good amp, good cabinet, good mic, good preamp, good compressor, go EQ, etc....
If you want a good sound, you need to have a fucking great stuff@200000$$
All you can do is to make a few good guitar tracks with your mic, then use EQ into your sequencer, and mix it with the bass and drum.

I've made some covers of Amon Amarth (http://www.youtube.com/user/PainfulPenetration)

For recording there album they don't take a stereo guitar track (recording a Distorded guitar in stereo is useless). they mix a lot of mics to found a good sound, then they recording a few track to have a massive sound.
In studio i think they use a reverb, a little delay to make a good spacialisation.

For live, they used a Peavey 6505 with one mic, with a Boss Noise gate NS2, Boss Tuner, and a wireless sound system AKG i think. That all!!!

I hope you have understood me, and if you have any questions, tell me!!!
