I'm becoming a huge fan of this band having only really discovered them recently.

Tales From The Thousand Lakes is very, very impressive.

Your thoughts?

Good album. Their early death metal stuff is also good. I don't know much of their later material.

I really like that album.. Too bad it was stolen when I joined the navy a few years back.. now that I am out I should buy it again.. but eh... I like Elegy.. but everyone has their own preferences.

Karelian Isthmus = fucking CLASSIC old school Scandi-death...EVILEST guitar tone ever for this style of music.
Tales Form The Thousand Likes = fucking mindblowing dismal progressive-influenced death/doom awesomeness.

They have one great album (The Karelian Isthmus) and one very good album (Tales from the Thousand Lakes). I don't really care for the rest, especially their most recent stuff.

don't buy anything after Elegy because everything they did after Elegy is trash hth

It isn't. But it isn't very heavy. Of course, you can like it or not... I like 'Tuonela' very much. There are good melodies, good sound... mostly clean vocals, but I really don't mind it. I like clean vocals, maybe even I prefer them to 'unclean' (that DOESN'T mean that I don't like well used growl or black shrieking).

The Karelian Ithsmus and Tales From The Thousand Lakes are easily some of the best albums in metal. 'the karelian ithsmus' is the darkest album ever recorded. genuinely an evil, sinister, haunting, dark album.

The musicianship on both albums is ace, that's not why the albums are so good. No one on earth besides them at the moment could make an album with the feeling and atmosphere like those two albums.

'Elegy' has it's moments but does not compare on any levels.

I would even say that The Karelian Isthmus is the best Finnish death metal CD ever (and the best Finnish metal CD ever, for that matter), topping both Demigod - The Slumber of Sullen Eyes and Demilich - Nesphite. Those two CDs are still great though, it's just that The Karelian Isthmus is easily one of the best three death metal CDs ever released (and those two are in the top five).

Have to agree that everything up to Tuonela was great, then it became an "aquired taste". I remember a song called "Greed" I think from that CD... best (Amorphis) vocals I'd heard yet, but the music didn't suit me anymore. That was a really good song though.
