Since you're talking about a second trip, keep something in mind...
After you leave the Schengen Area, you need to stay out of the Area for a full 90 days before you can come back and have your counter reset.
Basically you get 90 days of travel without a visa and if you want to come back to any Schengen countries, you can majorly fuck yourself by accidentally overstaying. Some countries like to count things differently (back to the 1st day you arrived vs the total number of days you were in the Area) despite pretty clear rules on this. It's just easier to stay out for 90 days to avoid the hassle.
Luckily, the UK isn't in the Schengen Area, so a lot of people just cool their heels there for 90 days rather than fly all the way back to the US.
Food for thought. When you figure out where you want to return, you're better off just getting your Visa stuff sorted right away.
England is going to be very difficult (and expensive) if you aren't working in a field in high demand (pretty much just Medicine).
