Anathema Vs My Dying Bride

I don't knwo but I heard Aaron from My Dying Bride say that "Anthema sounds like a piss-poor version of Radiohead" but I also heard he said that they helped started the Genre!

Aaron is included in the "Thank You" list inside the booklet for Judgement. The joke is in the word "Versus".

This is where the "false dumpsters" get their covers blown off (wah!! haaa!! haah!).

i suppose theres always been a rivalry between the 2 bands especially in the early 90's though the bands sound wildly different now.I like them both though Anathema IMO are better.

MDB & Anathema are great bands, who gives a shit if they're enemies as long as they make great music and give us the pleasures that we need. :)

i think comparing MDB and Anathema style now is very dificult, if not impossible. i was talking about their old style

Ah well, then it's a stalemate for me - I don't like early MDB (first 2 records) as much as early Anathema. :p But I love the lyrics on Turn Loose the Swans enormously - I think they deserve better music.

They are both great bands but I prefer Anathema and MDB has really dissapointed me with 34,788% (really crap) and I don't like the fact that Martin Powell has left cause he was a great musician and his violin made them so unique

I believe 34,788% is their best one; for me MDB is mainly the last 3 records, plus "The Angel and the Dark River". Martin Powell's violin was just a sound, it wasn't the thing that made them unique, and without him they are as unique as before. The creative identity of the band is in Aaron's lyrics, the supporting musical imagery and the art of "almost-nice" melodies that still have a twist in them.

MDB dump on Anathema from a great height (in my not-so-humble opinion :D :p ).
Although in saying that, 'thema are my second fav band of all time (well, that may need to be changed to 'were my 2nd fav..', I got the new cd yesterday :err: ).
Early Anathema is amazing, the way they take a riff, and just build it (such as in Kingdom), you get such an amazing picture painted. But I prefer MDB, I love the melodic riffs, the tortured vocals, and the variations within each song. Both bands take you on a pretty wild journey with each song. It's a close thing- I liked every song Anathema had ever done up to the new album, and MDB have done a couple I'm not totally taken with, but they win. Maybe because I heard them first, I dunno.

It's interesting to see the paths the so-called 'Big Three' have taken (MDB, Anathema, & Paradise Lost for those that don't know). Hell, they all pretty much started the whole death-doom thing in the early 90s. PL refined their style alot, then ditched it somewhat and went for a goth-pop-rock thing, which was kinda a big jump for them. Anathema have slowly progressed with each album, and while I'm so-far not taken with the new cd (only listened to it twice though, so aint gonna condemn it yet), their development has been pretty much seamless, I don't get the feeling of a massive stylistic jump like PL. MDB went for all the weird experimentation early on (more so than the others), more-or-less culminating in 34.... I would not have been surprised to see them continue in that vain and lose some of the doom qualities like the other two, but instead the re-evaluated where they were, and decided to take a step back. So here we are, more than 10 years on & the only on that still sounds remotely similar to when they started out are MDB, even though each band has gone through massive changes.
I'm not really going anywhere with that, I just find it interesting :)

I don't agree with you. Yeah they've lost the violins but the last two albums proove that they are back to their roots with killer songs possesing very strong occult power!!!!!!!!!

Now see, I thought that 38% was pure, unadultered crap. Aaron's singing isn't that great, and works well with some of their music (The Angel and the Dark River), but 38% isn't a solid backing for that.

With Anathema, it's slightly different for me, and I could never get into any of the albums after Eternity. So, I think I'll just say I'm a doom-death guy, and MDB is the one of the only originators that are anywhere close to it still. The Dreadful Hours, while no where near TLTS, is still a pretty good album.

Back in my hole..

People who call '34.788% Complete' crap have pretty much displayed their reluctance to experience an album outside what they perceive it to be.

You can't honestly tell me that 'The Whore, The Cook and the Mother' and 'Base Level Erotica' are "complete crap". That's just stupid.

As to who is better, I think that the last 3 Anathema albums probably win out, however, the post Darren White days kill compared to when he was in the band.

My Dying Bride were my favourite band for about 5 years. The new album doesn't stike me as particularly good...

So I'll say Anathema.

Although MDB are not far behind.

What I've heard about them is Aaron says Anathema smoke cannabis every time and steal towels at the hotels. Also he says that he considers Danny a great guy and he'd like to drink some beer with him, but when the whole two bands meet, they can't tolerate each other.
What about albums, my favorite band was Anathema before they released "AFDTE", I think it's crap, I liked "Dreadful Hours" more. 34.788...complete is great from beginning to the end, the only crap in MDB's discography is "Like Gods of the Sun"(except "It will come" and "It will cum ...nightmare").

Well, I'll try popping 34% back in when I'm awake enough to listen to it (Tuesday maybe?), but until then I'll hold to my premise.

The Dreadful Hours isn't bad at all. Definately not their best, but still better. Currently, I'd rank MDB's albums as:

TLTS, TAatDR, AtFW, TDH, LGotS, TLatEotW, 34%.

So, other than Angel, the death vox wins out.

Anyway, fo the guy dissing on LGotS, How can you dislike For You and For My Fallen Angel?

Anyway, this is what I get for posting in an Anathema group considering my views on post-Eternity albums.

back in my hole,

a doomster cant go wrong wth Turn Loose The Swans... thus i only have Lie Gods Of The Sun (i vote For My Fallen Angel the saddest music i ever experienced) and As The Flowers Wither... thus im on a journey to own the first 3 albumscatalysers of doom metal ... Serenades (Anathema), Turn Loose The Swans (MDB), Gothic (Paradise Lost).

i like MDB but theres something in some songs that just put me in a sedation level, Aaron voice desenvolvement is too slow.
