Anathema Vs My Dying Bride

i think comparing MDB and Anathema style now is very dificult, if not impossible. i was talking about their old style

i think the early MDB was better. more thought out and better executed. Turn Loose swans kills serenades in my opinion. i'm much more interested in anathema's newer style, though i dont think a fine day to exit is as good as judgement.

It's interesting to see the paths the so-called 'Big Three' have taken (MDB, Anathema, & Paradise Lost for those that don't know). Hell, they all pretty much started the whole death-doom thing in the early 90s. PL refined their style alot, then ditched it somewhat and went for a goth-pop-rock thing, which was kinda a big jump for them. Anathema have slowly progressed with each album, and while I'm so-far not taken with the new cd (only listened to it twice though, so aint gonna condemn it yet), their development has been pretty much seamless, I don't get the feeling of a massive stylistic jump like PL. MDB went for all the weird experimentation early on (more so than the others), more-or-less culminating in 34.... I would not have been surprised to see them continue in that vain and lose some of the doom qualities like the other two, but instead the re-evaluated where they were, and decided to take a step back. So here we are, more than 10 years on & the only on that still sounds remotely similar to when they started out are MDB, even though each band has gone through massive changes.
I'm not really going anywhere with that, I just find it interesting :)

I agree on the Big Three assesment, although the Anathema regrssion has two points: Darren and then Duncan leaving the band. As far as MDB, they put out 34.788 just to fuck around, realized that it was a bunch of shit and went back to their roots... with limited success I must say. They still haven't found something to fill in the vacuum that Martin left, which was one of the main ingredients to their uniqueness. PL are shit nowadays, and let's leave it at that.

As for the controversy, I remember reading Aaron complaining about Vinnie stealing some of his riffs for TSE. He dclined to comment further, and identify the riffs, but I suspect they don't get along like they used to.

Well about the tree regressions and the biggest dissapointment of all - I find that Paradise Lost are headlining the charts!!! They now relly suck!!!!!!!!!!!
Anathema "regression" was for GOOD!!! Now they are making real music with real emotions than before (Darren's period)

The big 3 did NOT invent doom metal nor did they provide some sort of "catalyst" for doom metal. Doom metal existed at least 20 years prior to them (Black Sabbath, Pentagram, etc...) and the big 3 were part of a "third wave" of doom, the second being such bands as Candlemass, Cathedral, and Saint Vitus.

Paradise Lost does not suck now nor have they ever sucked. If anything, their middle period (Icon and Draconian Times) was their worst period.

My Dying Bride's earliest output (Towards the Sinister, As the Flower Withers, and Turn Loose the Swans) completely annihilates early Anathema but Anathema are now a better band than My Dying Bride (who would be better if they continued down the same path as the godly 34.788% Complete but sadly they backtracked).

In your opinion that is. ;)

Notice I said "Death-Doom". Really, how many were doing that 'chord-progression-with-melodic-lead-and-growling' thing back in the early 90s? Sure, they were not the only bands, but they were at the forefront of the scene (and I think it's fair to say that PL are widely regarded as one of the originators of the death-doom thing as it is today. This isn't based on some opinion I've formed, I've just read that in alot of different publications by people who have been in the scene for alot longer than I have, so I trust them). The death-doom thing as it is, is quite different from what the likes of Candlemass did. Doom has been around for a long time and hopefully will remain.

Whoever says Paradise Lost sold out or followed trends is a complete and utter moron. There's no getting around it. Here's something no one pays attention to: they sell much less copies now than their most "trendy" output, which is Draconian Times. They have actually become less trendy.

it's a shame that a bunch of metalheads that didnt even heard their sound after One Second (like me) will be with their foot behind after readind all this. I only have Gothic and Lost Paradise... I dont know if icon and Draconian Times were their worse albums... well i'll have to averiguate that. HAIL!

I want for nothing...I Live For Nothing...Im Waiting To Die...Afraid Of Dying

Ah well, it's pretty much obvious right now that Paradise Lost are aiming to reach the audience of HIM. "Believe in Nothing" is just the same type of goth-pop decorated by "metal" sounds .

The fact that they sell less than before, means only that they're a failed pop band, as opposed to a successful pop band.

"One Second" was a good pop record, on the other hand. "Host" is a bit bland. The best one for me is "Shades of God" !

They are both great bands but I prefer Anathema and MDB has really dissapointed me with 34,788% (really crap) and I don't like the fact that Martin Powell has left cause he was a great musician and his violin made them so unique
My thoughts exactly.

As far as comparing the two, MDB are the better doom metal band (Turn Loose The Swans and The Angel And The Dark River slay Serenades), but Anathema are better musicians, song writers and the better band overall (The Silent Enigma up to A Natural Disaster, with the exception of AFDTE, slay, rape and destroy anything MDB has ever done).

Hm, its hard to compare them...
Anathema is my all-time-fave band... but I often listen to MDB and Turn loose the swans is a killer album...but still it won't reach me fave Anathema albums...
And I think MDB don't create that earworm tracks like for example: Regret, Deep, A Dying Wish, Release...
Just tried out something: I asked a MDB fan to name his 3 fave MDB songs in like 10 seconds... hmm...an Anathema fan would be able to name his/hers in 5 seconds....lol, haha

I cant chose, i honestly like every album anathema, p lost, and MDB have ever put out, some more than others though, i think 'beilve in nothing' ' serenades' and ' Light at the..' are the weakest albums by each band, although each still contains some really good songs!

i still remember that thread :D
first i thought 'wtf is mullholland doing back?' :erk: metalheads screw them
