Andy Franck's Vocal Malfunction?

Yes, I heard they didn't get in until friday as well. After a long flight the day before, you're talking about a really long set too. I did also think the energy was a bit sub-par, but in all, I really thought they delivered an exellent sounding performance!

i overheard someone say that Brainstorm came to the make-up signing "right off the plane"...was that true? if so, i could understand the lack of energy as well as the brain-farts...

This is pretty much true. They had very little downtime between arrival in the country and arrival at the festival for soundcheck. Then very little time between that and having to show up for their signing and performance.

In response to the "jump the gun" posters...how about you assume, first, that maybe these folks are human and have other things going on, rather than first jumping to alcohol or drugs. Not all of these bands are your stereotypical party musicians, most - if not all - are very professional about their art.

Enjoyed the set and at one time after a mess up, after the song he went over to one of the guitar players and said something.

While I thoroughly enjoyed their set, Andy not only screwed up three songs lyrically, but his energy level was off as well. While opening night rust excuses the lyrical missteps, it doesn't explain the lack of energy. If anything, one would expect the energy level to be through the roof on opening night. In addition, when Andy was lost lyrically, Torsten looked pissed. Band members don't normally get pissed at each other for honest mistakes. However, they do get annoyed if you show up on stage (cough, cough) "under the weather".

As Tammy noted, Brainstorm is such a great live band, they have a lot of wiggle room. It was an "A" performance for an average band, a "B" for Brainstorm.

I said as much after their set. The band was great fun to watch. They picked great songs (except maybe for the first song that seemed a bit slow for an opening song) and played with passion. However, Andy's performance and energy were not anywhere near what it was the first time Brainstorm was here. I was disappointed in that, but I still loved their set and had fun watching it.

Their performance this year was not as impressive as their last ProgPower appearance, but despite the errors and other small issues it was still a fun and exciting show to watch. I'm more than willing to give Andy a pass.

I talked to Andy after Sabaton and he was concerned with how the Crimson Glory songs would go since he didn't get the chance to practice with them earler in the day and hadn't even met them yet. He was hoping they'd play the song just like the CD (with no extended jams) so he wouldn't mess up. I thought he was amazing with CG, hitting notes I didn't even know he could reach.

I was also the fan that asked if he'd do "End In Sorrow" and my friend Taylor asked for "Painside," both of which he totally nailed! It's surprising that the mistakes came during the big hits instead of the deeper album cuts.

I don't care if there were a couple of mistakes, they were still fantastic. I was so happy just to see them again it didn't matter.

Hey, man... it's rock n roll.

Jetlag? Drunk? Brainfart? Nerves? Lines of coke off of a stripper's ass at Cheetah's? Who cares. Bad nights happen. And for totally stupid reasons, sometimes.

I've forgotten lyrics on stage. I've seen drummers start wrong drum riffs for wrong songs. I've seen guitar amps flip circuit breakers on note one. I've broken bass strings on note one. Damned we be, if we cannot pick the ball back up and keep running.

I could see one of the guitarists visibly pissed at Andy. I know that feeling. But there's nothing you can really do about it, except NOT pull an Axl Rose. Which they didn't! So kick-ass for them! Get back on track, finish the setlist, and be pissed off the rest of the night. I've had those nights, I'm sure I'll have more of them.

Even the super-impressive can have their unimpressive moments.

Brainstorm still kicks ass. I will not hold that performance against them.

Andy is very respectful of his craft... he NEVER drinks or even smokes a cigarette before any performance. Their planes were delayed, they had almost no down time to rehearse etc.... they are human, yes, we would have loved a perfect show... but you know what? They were my fav out of the whole weekend anyway! I can't wait to have them back in the States again.

I'm guessing these guys were all tired to begin with. My butt was dragging from driving down from Tennessee, much less flying from Germany.

I'd never seen Brainstorm live before, so I didn't really notice anything amiss. I thought it was a great set. I only learned that their set wasn't normal for them because Zod mentioned that Andy was a bit off. If someone who had seen Brainstorm before hadn't told me that things weren't running as usual, I'd never have guessed.

I really enjoyed their set. :)

Will you be grading on a curve this weekend, Professor Zod?

Have to agree with you on this one. If there's one thing I've learned from being on the road with Nick and being around musicians it that sometimes shit just happens.

Sometimes you have a little too much fun. Sometimes there are technical issues. Sometimes there is other shit going on that you have no control over. Shit happens and you just got to roll with the punches and keep on playing.

Isn't Symphorce actually Andy's band? He is a member of Brainstorm, sure, but has has surely been practicing for multiple performances with various bands - Crimson Glory included - over the past year.) I think as much as we look up to these musicians and singers, it's good for us to realize every now and then that they are human too and can sometimes go into information overload or have a rocky night.

Brainstorm was still one of my favorite performances this weekend ... next to Sabaton that is, which brings me to my next point ...

I think the Brainstorm set lacked energy this year because WE (the crowd) all lacked energy this year.

I don't think most folks will argue that Sabaton kicked the majority of the crowds asses on Friday and that left us with a lot less energy to feed Brainstorm on Saturday. Sure we were into them, but we were all tired as shit and I think they could feel that. Many of us are also obviously comparing this with Brainstorm's performance at PPV (my first year), which as I understand ranks probably somewhere in the top 5 of all-time amazing high-energy PP performances. Considering all this, I think Brainstorm put on a pretty excellent show on Saturday and I certainly wouldn't be opposed to having them return again.

I TOTALLY agree with this. I'll also add that a lot of us also had their asses thoroughly kicked by Primal Fear the night before and quite a few Queensryche fans went crazy for Mindcrime the night before that!

I gave the setlist to kittybeast, so when she finds this thread she should be able to post it up...

Very possible. However, I would think this would explain him running out of gas, more than starting off low energy. Maybe he was pacing himself? Who knows. As I said, we still had a blast during their set, and they still gave what would be considered a great performance, for a mere mortal live band.

I guess, though I'd attribute that just as much to Pagan's Mind. PM put on another stellar set and between Orphaned Land and them, I didn't have the energy to stand for Brainstorm. I kind of pity any band that follows PM. Sonata got totally outdone by them and I think Brainstorm did too. The crowd was also far more packed on the floor for PM to the point where it was faster for me to run out the doors to get to the other side than make my way through the crowd to get back to my husband.

It's just unfortunate that for those of us that did not see them before, and were prepped by countless posts of how amazing they were at their last PP appearance, and Glenn saying something like "ok...clear the stage so that Brainstorm can destroy this place" after the crew introductions, and the long intro music.....then they come out with a brand new sleepy song. Then a couple of rough spots and....ugh. Granted, they got past it and started to crank it up but by then it was too late and the set was over. It's too bad....I was prepared to get my ass handed to me and it just didn't happen.

it's live and it's right in your face!

From where I was standing, this was quite literally true.

I thoroughly enjoyed the set, although I was a wee bit disappointed that the shirt stayed on the whole time. lol. So it wasn't quite as high-energy as the last time...still was tied (with Primal Fear and Sabaton) for favorite set of the fest.
