So my friend and I made our way to Northern Lights in Clifton Park yesterday, anticipating a great show. I was on the guest list for the show, which hopefully was going to equate to me getting to meet the band and such. We got there, ran into some guys that I had met at the DVD shoot in Sayerville. They drove 5 hours to come see the show! Definetly a cool thing to hear from other fans of the band.
My friend and I go in the willcall entrance, and I am confirmed for the guest list. I start to get pumped, and then ask about the backstage pass I was supposed to get. Of course, there was none. Great... So I walk into the venue no more than 10 feet.... and Joey Belladonna is sitting at the bar. I managed to get a few seconds of his time to explain what happened regarding the meet and greet, making sure I showed him my NFMB shirt (thanks Thraxx!), and he asked me my name and message board name so he could talk to the right people. He directed me to the band manager and some other guy whos name was Anthony.
The resulting coversation was that I technically had the backstage passes, and I "could go anywhere." I felt a little more content with hearing that from them. Anthony told me to wait over by the merch tables, and he "would come and get me" to bring me to the meet and greet around 8:30. So I waited through the entirety of Brick by Bricks set, waiting for this guy to come back. He came back once, but didnt even say anything to me, and then proceeded to not come back again.
I then decided to go and stand up next to the "backstage" entrance. I thought maybe I could grab this guy before he completely forgets about me. By this time, Last Call was hitting the stage. They were pretty good; a definite improvement over last time. The closed with a little bit of "99 Problems" by Jay-Z. Last time I saw them, they closed with Creeping Death, which was cool too. The whole night I was trying to think of WHO the singer reminded me of, and it just came to me now; Danny DeVito. Very similar voice.
ANYWAY
So I enjoy their set from the side of the stage. Anthony came by about 3 times, and when I asked him about the meet and greet, he said "There is some shit going on backstage, not yet" which sounded like the most bullshit response ever. So I waited and waited, and I eventually tried talking to other people who worked for Anthrax. If I am correct, I talked to the band manager, and he told me the meet and greet "will be after the show." At that point, I just wanted to enjoy Anthrax when they came on.
Anthrax hit the stage, and people were going crazy. It was really intense. I was off to the right watching, so I didnt have to fight the crowds of people to stand up. They ran through pretty much an identical set list to the DVD show, without Lone Justice and a few others. The place where they played is fucking RIDICULOUSLY loud due to the low ceiling and the size of the PA in a small place.
During the beginning of the show, there was some guy who had two drumsticks backstage, and he seemed like he was warming up to play. I had no clue who it was, and to be honest, all I heard was 'tap tap tap' while I was trying to listen to the band. I thought it was some person who had a terminal illness who was going to get to play with the band before they died. Boy was I wrong. The band announces "Jason Bittner from Shadows Fall is here to jam with us" and they proceede to go right into AIR! Fucking amazing to say the least. There is a Stigmata reunion show this week, and he was the drummer for that band. So they fucking pound through that song, and everyone was just going crazy. The energy picked up from there. As the show progressed, Scott would get score updates from the Yankees game as it was happening from the infamous Anthony. I am talking who is on what base, the score, who is up, the whole nine yards. At some points, it was while he was playing.
After that point, I decided to see if I could stand backstage, because according to Anthony, "I could go anywhere." So I went backstage and watched the rest of the show standing next to Jason Bittner and random Anthrax crew. I got a few "You cant be back here" remarks, but I had to explain I had the passes, but they didnt have one for me. I guess people didn't want to hear the explanation, so they just let me stay. At one point, Joey saw me again, and he pointed to his shirt in the same spot where the message board logo was in mine, and threw up the horns to me. It was cool, and it got me pumped for meeting them afterwards.
The show concluded, I got to thank Jason Bittner for doing an AWESOME job on drums, and then the waiting game started. Anthony was no where to be found, but I finally got the band managers attention. He confirmed that there would be a meet and greet, snd Anthony would be setting it up. I understood, so I sat there and shot the shit with my friend and the other 2 people who were waiting. We talked about Gigantour, and we even talked with some of the roadies who dished some dirt on some of the Gigantour bands.
My friend and I BOTH had work and class in the morning, so we were getting nervous. The other guy who was waiting with us had an interview disc he wanted signed, and I just wanted to take a picture. THe woman with us had a drum stick she caught, so we were all just talking, waiting, and watching. Anthony came by again, but didnt make eye contact. The band manager DISAPPEARED. I didnt see him again after he told us we would still do the meet and greet.
The venue kicked us out, so we said fuck that and drove around the back to the bus. By this time it was almost 1 am, and I was getting kinda pissed. All the stuff was packed up, and no one was coming out. We stood there, in the cold waiting. We asked the last guy out of the bus what was going on. He said he didn't know, so I told him Anthony was supposed to set it up. Anthony came out, and said "OK, what do you have that you want signed?" I had nothing, but the other guy had his record, so Antony took it inside to get it signed. I forgot my Alive 2 DVD, so I missed out. Thinking about it now, I should have gave him my ticket stub to get signed. After he returned the record, that was it. He told us the band didnt want to come out, and that was it.
I have been a pro ANTHRAX fan for years. I dont care what lineup it is, Anthrax is Anthrax to me. I waited for an hour and a half just to say hi and maybe shake their hand and get a picture. I blew off studying for a HUGE test to come to the show to see these guys, and I came away with nothing. There were 4 OF US. It would have taken no more than 5 minutes to sign and take a picture. I guess that was too much to ask of a band that you are loyal to for so many years. The guy who had his record signed drove 5 hours to see them! Bullshit. What pisses me off the most is the fact that we were lied to for that long, and no one told us what was happening. I guess they didnt think we would care when we found out the bus was driving away without telling us. Had we not tried to find out ourselves, we would have known nothing about what was going on.
In conclusion, a good night was ruined by all this shit. Now I am going to go fail a test.
