Basically my girlfriend is watching her neighbors house while there on vacation. There is an old safe in the basement that hasn't been opened in over a hundred years (last person to open it hung himself in the same room as it, hasn't been touched since). The lady who's house it belongs to says she doesn't want to open it (in fear that a hex will be put on her lol) but she said we can. She doesn't want to be home when we do it and she comes home tomorrow so tonight is our only night.

I know its a Sargent and Greenleaf lock. The actual dial says "Patt September 18th 1860 January 9th 1866 August 28th 1866 July 14th 1857 Ex. 7 years July 14th 1871" (in that order) The lock has the numbers 20-100 (the space where 1-20 is has nothing labeled or etched in). The dial indicator (the notch to show what number you are on) is an upside down star.
I have called Sergant and Greenleafs customer support all yesterday but they won't even pick up their phones. Basically we have just tonight to open it and we can't damage it. Anybody know if the old stethoscope to the dial and listen for clicks method works? This is such a fun adventure I don't wanna miss out on.
BTW I already called a locksmith, they said it will be about $425 starting, I can barely pay my bills on my salary let alone pay that by means of adventure.
Thanks for any input!
