all that said: if i had to buy a compact camera today i would probably get the fujifilm finepix f200exr and shoot it in 6 megapixel exr mode ~ [ame]http://www.amazon.com/Fujifilm-FinePix-F200EXR-Digital-Stabilized/dp/B001R23JMQ[/ame]
it's got some nice features like a 5 x zoom lens starting at 28mm (so, fairly wide) and sensor shift image stabilization (this is very useful) -- the sensor is still small BUT actually less crappy than most compact cameras because it has some actual InNoVaTiVe TeChNOloGy
anyway check out some reviews, especially this shit: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/fujifilmf200exr/page8.asp -- at 6 megapixels i don't think there is another compact camera that would do so relatively well at iso 1600, so this is about as good as it's going to get today
then again, any used dslr for $300 will absolutely slaughter this dinky little thing but you already said that's not what you want
