I'm being actively recruited by a place up there, and I'm interested enough to go through their process.

I'm curious if anyone up there can give me any impressions on living in the area. Housing, schools, general living etc. And most importantly...how's the metal?

We're going up there with Raven this April, to a place called The Dead Horse Cantina. I think they do metal shows up there fairly regularly. Also, I know of several female-fronted metal bands in Pittsburgh so it probably isn't a bad spot.

(Here's the event link for anyone near/around Pittsburgh.)

I used to live up there, where abouts in Pittsburgh are you considering? I know the eastern and northern suburbs real well.

Not sure about the metal scene up there. The only local metal band I know of is Icarus Witch.

Damn. I hope they at least get tour stops.

The company's in Canonsburg. Supposed to be really nice up there all around. Big change from Louisiana in pretty much every possible way, lol.

Hello – Jumping in way late, but I relocated from Nashville to Pittsburgh for a few months in 1999-2000. My big shock was that housing was *hugely* expensive, compared to Nashville, as was the downtown parking.

At the time, I had been out of work for several months and so took the job without visiting. If I had it to do over again, I would *definitely* check out the housing situation first. And the local grocery stores. It was a little disconcerting to find that there were bars outside the local Giant Eagle, so you couldn’t take your cart into the parking lot. Apparently, they’d had problems with people stealing them.

When I was there, Pittsburgh had really made an effort to provide arts opportunities in the downtown area, although the metal scene at the time wasn’t great. You could catch Donnie Iris playing somewhere just about every weekend, though. ;)

I also found it a little difficult to fit in there. Unlike other places that are more of a “melting pot”, people seem to put roots down in Pittsburgh and stay there. While that’s great if you are a native, that makes it hard to break in to a social circle!

I don't know anything about Pittsburgh's scene, so don't take this at face value, but I remember years ago that people would constantly bitch about shows going to Philly instead and how shows never come to Pittsburgh. Maybe that's changed though. Soilwork wrote a song about that city didn't they? haha

Pain of Salvation will be playing at the Deadhorse Cantina on Friday, May 3rd. We added the show recently. :)

Imminent Sonic Destruction will be there as well, though no Kingcrow on that date.

Icarus Witch is an amazing Pittsburgh-based band as well.

Better late than never. Housing in the city looks to be kind of insane, but the suburbs seem to be pretty reasonable. Thanks for the info.

Hah! Indeed they did:

And, amusingly enough, they've got a tour stop there on the 21st.

I was wondering just this morning if you guys' tours made stops there. Because...catching Intromental tours would be freakin amazing!

And it would be hard to get worse than Baton Rouge for metal.

I got at least 3 or 4 more shows/tours coming to Pittsburgh this year, likely all at the Cantina. Hopefully it'll all go through.

I've seen that elsewhere. Oh, and Giant Eagle is still the king of grocery stores up there, though I hear there's finally some decent competition to them.

You say that like it's a bad thing!

That is ABSOLUTELY VERY TRUE! I moved to Pittsburgh when I was 12 and I really never fit in, being that I was born in the midwest and spent my early childhood in western Washington state outside of Seattle. My parents weren't accepted by the locals until they were there at least 10 or more years! And even then we were still outsiders in their eyes. Pittsburgh is unique in that regard. People leave, but hardly anyone actually moves TO Pittsburgh.

But, though I've been away since 1995, I still miss it to some degree. Western PA is stll very beautiful in the fall....

By the way Mardoch - if you possibly can, get a house OUTSIDE of Allegheny county. The taxes will kill you. You had said that the potential job was in Canonsburg which is in Washington county. Hopefully the local casino/racetrack will keep the taxes fairly low

That's the idea. And my industry preys on, er has for customers!, casinos.

I've heard that Washington is the county to hit.

The Meadows Racetrack and Casino. And yeah, it's pretty good - though I go for the harness racing, not the slots or anything else. There's one in downtown Pittsburgh from what I've heard but never been there.

Speaking of casinos, I wonder if any metal acts would play there, or just regular metal venues? Always worth a shot to ask! :)
