Arcturus vs Ulver

so garm quits arcturus because they want to get too serious and he wants to focus on ulver (yes i know this is very old news). if he had to choose only 1 to continue would you rather it have been arcturus or are you glad he stayed with ulver? i have all the arcturus albums, and the first 3 ulver, perdition city, and a few misc newer mp3s, and i think the newer arcturus is more intersting than the newer ulver. admittedly, i havent let ulver sink in as much as arcturus has, but i dont think they could top masquerade and sham mirrors with what they are currently doing (or what theyve done in the past). im sure most of you enjoy, and listen to ulver more than me though, and im curious what other people think of garm's choice, and the two bands in general.

Anyhoo, Ulver wins IMO. Bergtatt is excellent, as is their last release, A Quick Fix of Melancholy EP. Everything in between is good in different ways.

Arcturus only have three albums, and I think all three are excellent in their own way. However, I have this sorry suspicion that the next Arcturus release is going to be disappointing. I wouldn't be surprised if they turned into Borknagar to be honest, and in all honesty, they should be way above that.

hmmm i think id have to agree with that. hopefully it'll be great, but probably just good.

now THATS A DIFFICULT dillema. Both bands are two of the greatest of our times for various reasons. They are very different .. for God's shake Arcturus play prog metal now, and Ulver .. well they cant decide what to play, soundtrack music perhaps (Svidd Neger = masterpiece). I listen to Arcturus for many years and i was an Arcturus fan, before i listened Ulver for the first time, so it is Arcturus for me.
Ulver dont have Sverd, hehe.

I really can't say since I enjoy both, but I would prefer that Garm focused on his work with Ulver, rather than Arcturus, since with Ulver you never know what you're going to get, and I like surprises

Ulver is one of my favorite bands. One of the most interesting musical endeavours I've ever witnessed. Stunning, remarkable group with at least one masterpiece.

I have 3 Arcturus CDs. Every once in awhile I even listen to one of them.

Oh yeah, the only reason I ever picked up all that Arcturus is because I love Garm's voice. I'm sure I won't even bother with their next material.

Sverd makes me feel like I chugged a gallon of Red Bull. Fucker's good, but gets annoying after awhile.

When speaking of those four:

1. Ulver
I love Bergtatt and Kveldsangerger. I'm still trying with Nattens. THe rest of the stuff is OK.

2. Borknagar
THe more I listen to the first two, the more I'm impressed. THe music on those is great. Quintessence is better than Archaic Course and Empiricism, which are both good as well. Haven't heard Epic.

3. Arcturus
Aspera is good. La Masquerade is good. Sham Mirrors is not.

4. Solefald
Other than Neonism and parts of Linear Scaffold, this band is worthless.

You didn't like their latest one? That is quite similar to Borknagar. Btw, do you realize that I am holding Neonism in my hands right now, and it is still sealed. I bought this on half.com maybe 6 months ago. I am beginning to unwrap it now...
