In regard to the author of this thread, I've always thought it difficult to "rate" a band if you were not there during their contemporary moments. Imo, "overrated" is a term people apply, to something they really just dont like. It's a term that is way overused to describe something. In 1964, I was 9 yrs old. The Beatles were attaining their lofty position in the music world. Fuck, there were Beatles cards, and all sorts of collectors items. I had a girlfriend back in 1969 who owned a pair of Beatle's panties!!!with MCartney's face all over the crotch. As if Paul was the "guardian to her garden" as she said. I said, fuck all that just take them off!!! I didn't mean to get sidetracked. Anyway, the Beatles were a phenomonin.Perid. There earlier music was "pop orientated" the late Sixties saw them open up especially with the help of drugs(LSD and Pot). History will have the Beatles rated as one of the most significant contributors to modern music. And one of the most influential. I believe just about every band working today owes the Beatles a musical debt of gratitude. Primarily, with their compositional structure and studio techniques(George Martin deserves a strong mention) Looking at the Beatles as individual musicians, and this being my opinion, Ringo Starr was/is an average drummer(I'm being kind) who kept the simple foundation. George Harrison was always overshadowed by Lennon/MCartney. But, through out various Beatles albums you'll find George's little "gems." Paul was/is an excellent bass player, songwriter and vocalist. His work today is average at best. John was the visionary of this band. He saw things musically, that the others did not, and was able to incorporate these ideas into song. Sure, the Beatles wrote some trash or "filler" material. But, they also composed some the most enduring songs ever. Just to name a few; Yesterday, Something, Let it Be, Eleanor Rigby, the whole Abbey Road album and the White Album. If you were alive then and have followed their careers, I don't understand how they can be called overrated. If you can't see that, then you don't have any musical awareness. So, put on some Pig Destroyer and take a dive out the window.
