The Beatles are massively overrated. Most of their material is either bubblegum pop with the depth of a puddle of piss, or borrowed heavily from blues/rock artists who preceded them. The fact that their best song is a cover of Chuck Berry (Rock N Roll Music) speaks volumes.

I heartily disagree with this post. The White Album, Revolver, Abbey Road, Sgt. Peppers are great albums with much in the way of depth, great songwriting and originality for the time period.

In regard to the author of this thread, I've always thought it difficult to "rate" a band if you were not there during their contemporary moments. Imo, "overrated" is a term people apply, to something they really just dont like. It's a term that is way overused to describe something. In 1964, I was 9 yrs old. The Beatles were attaining their lofty position in the music world. Fuck, there were Beatles cards, and all sorts of collectors items. I had a girlfriend back in 1969 who owned a pair of Beatle's panties!!!with MCartney's face all over the crotch. As if Paul was the "guardian to her garden" as she said. I said, fuck all that just take them off!!! I didn't mean to get sidetracked. Anyway, the Beatles were a phenomonin.Perid. There earlier music was "pop orientated" the late Sixties saw them open up especially with the help of drugs(LSD and Pot). History will have the Beatles rated as one of the most significant contributors to modern music. And one of the most influential. I believe just about every band working today owes the Beatles a musical debt of gratitude. Primarily, with their compositional structure and studio techniques(George Martin deserves a strong mention) Looking at the Beatles as individual musicians, and this being my opinion, Ringo Starr was/is an average drummer(I'm being kind) who kept the simple foundation. George Harrison was always overshadowed by Lennon/MCartney. But, through out various Beatles albums you'll find George's little "gems." Paul was/is an excellent bass player, songwriter and vocalist. His work today is average at best. John was the visionary of this band. He saw things musically, that the others did not, and was able to incorporate these ideas into song. Sure, the Beatles wrote some trash or "filler" material. But, they also composed some the most enduring songs ever. Just to name a few; Yesterday, Something, Let it Be, Eleanor Rigby, the whole Abbey Road album and the White Album. If you were alive then and have followed their careers, I don't understand how they can be called overrated. If you can't see that, then you don't have any musical awareness. So, put on some Pig Destroyer and take a dive out the window.

 last part was classic. I was there and was young, probably too young to appreciate like others do. Hardrock was comming on strong when I was a teen and I just didnt see people still all wound up over the Beatles. But yes they do own some classics and I was perfect age... 6 when I was into "I wanna hold your Hand" I went to see Yellow Submarine and it made me sickish feeling. The quirky stuff like Elonore Rigby and Roccy Racoon was amusing but didnt make me do flips like some people. I never once bought a Beatles album or 45 and never will. Yesterday and Let it Be own a piece of my soul but who needs to hear them again.

There's that theory again, "You either like it or you don't." It's NOT DIFFICULT to UNDERSTAND. I just happen to believe the "Beatles" were major contributors to the fabric of modern music.

Interestingly, you didn't name one Lennon or Harrison song in your whole post, and they are responsible for the band's strongest material.

I think The Beatles are really a very, very, very impressive group. But I certainly don't think they're any more great than Led Zeppelin, Radiohead, and whatever the other mega-loved groups are. The thing that makes The Beatles a potentially overrated band to me, is the fact that the people who love them claim that there is no alternative. Sure, maybe Radiohead and Led Zeppelin fans do that to. But when Radiohead and Led Zeppelin fans do it, people don't tend to say "yeah, you're right, they're the best band of all-time and no one else is as good." With The Beatles, a lot of people DO say that, which makes them overrated.

I think Led Zeppelin is a lot better than The Beatles. They're all around more talented except in song writing.

The only people who agree with people who say The Beatles are the best band ever are Classic Rock N00BS. A lot of them think The Beatles are the greatest but rarely do they ever stay in that thinking.
