Hey,

Since I'm sure people here have researched this already, can anybody give me suggestions for artists in similar style to Opeth's clean material? Especially jazzier stuff like Face of Melinda. Thanks in advance!

I wonder if anyone knows of any of these obscure 70's prog bands that inspired Mike with Damnation... If anyone knows please post some names :)

dunno if this counts, but Agalloch always reminds me of that side of the mellower, acoustic-y stuff. check them out if you haven't already! they have a page on The End's website (www.theendrecords.com)
...i wouldn't say they're as musically complex as Opeth though. ...but still pretty damn wicked!

Agalloch rips dude! I love em! Their sound seems to lack aggression though. It seems to have the same mood all the time but still very good stuff. I'd just like to say PORCUPINE TREE rules!!!! GGGGrrrroooaar!!!

that should get you off to a good start on obscure prog from the 70s

some honorable mentions of less obscure 60s/70s bands, but perhaps you arent familiar yet:

later era beatles (revolver, abbey road, sgt. peppers, etc)
led zeppelin (1,2,3,4,houses,physical,out door, presence)
deep purple (fireball, burn, machine head, stormbringer, etc)
black sabbath (self titled, paranoid, master, bloody, sabotage, etc)

these arent exactly "prog" , but certainly toyed with the genre on occasion, and helped revolutionize the genres they were in.
