I was in the gym listening for the Nth time the "Extraterrestrial Live" version of B.O.C 'Veteran Of The Psychic Wars' that has one of the best solos in history IMO. That day Buck Dharma kick so much ass that I bet the audience inmolated themselves in awe as a sacrifice to a guitar god.

So I want to start a thread about astounding guitar solos, those that make you stop whatever you're doing and listening in sheer respect. So the first to pop-up in my head:

Blue Oyster Cult - 'Veteran Of The Psychic Wars' (live version)
Megadeth - 'Tornado Of Souls'
Coroner - 'Nosferatu'
Deep Purple - 'Highway Star' (live)
Black Sabbath - 'Heaven And Hell'
Judas Priest - 'Tyrant' (live)

NP: Helloween - 'Light The Universe'

I hope you don't mean the the live solo of Heaven and Hell from Live Evil.. because that was freakin awful.. ruined the whole song... but anyways i can't really think of ones off the top of my head so i would have to say all of Randy Rhoads solos on the Tribute live album...

Freak Kitchen - See You In Pittsburgh (especially the shreddy outtro)
Nitro Pit Bull - Majestic (my definition of balls out shred!)
Just about anything Romeo (from Sy-X) does...
Shadow Play - Rory Gallagher
Moonchild - Rory Gallagher (From the Stagestruck lp/cd)
For The Love of God - Steve Vai
Voodoo Chile (SLight Return) - Stevie Ray Vaughan
Call It Sleep - Steve Vai
Western Vacation - Bob Harris (Vai solo, under the name of Reckless Fable)
^^^^^^One of THE best guitar solos EVER!

Megadeth - 'Tornado Of Souls'

Oh man, what a solo! Marty Friedman = :worship:
One of my fav guitarists, I really can't think of anyone else being capable of pulling off a solo lasting ONE WHOLE MINUTE and not bore me for fifteen fucking years! A work of genius!

I'd add Steve Vai - For The Love of God (godly!) and Dream Theater - Learning To Live at the top of my list.

And some general choices:
Any solo by Michael Denner
Any solo by Andy LaRocque
Any solo by Mike Flyntz & Mark Reale
Any solo by Jeff Loomis
Any solo by Ritchie Blackmore
Any solo by Marty Friedman

oldskool:
Steve Rothery (Marillion) - Kayleigh, Easter
newskool:
Piotr Grundzinski (Riverside) - Acronym Love, Conceiving You
Jasun Tipton (Zero Hour) - Demise & Vestige, Rebirth, A Passage

For me the master of guitar solo's is still Michael Schenker during his period in UFO. His unique mix of melody and speed is unsurpassed as far as I am concered.

I have to admit I'm not a huge solo guy, but there are those who do it with class, and so tend to catch my ear.

I like:
Mikael Akerfeldt (always creative and fun to listen too when soloing)
Jimmy Page
Jerry Garcia
Pretty much everybody whose been in Thin Lizzy
All the solos on the first two Mercyrful Fate lps.
Jeff Loomis
Ritchie Blackmore
Mathais Jabs from Scorpions doesn't get enough credit
...and though simplistic, there's something I like about Angus Young

...more I'm forgetting, but that's the jist.

He is sooo underrated! He shows much taste in his soloing and his sense of melody is impeccable! Not to mention songwriting...

I hear you! He's really great, lately I've been listening old Scorps works mostly and he really shines.

I guess that would be raw energy! Angus ROCKS! :headbang:

Zakk Wylde: Superterrorizer
MEgadeth: Lucretia, Tornado of Souls
Testament: Musical Death, the Ritual
Metallica: Unforgiven, Master of Puppets
Iced Earth: The Prophecy
Led Zeppelin: Stairway to Heaven, Whole Lotta Love
Hendrix: All Along the Watchtower
Morbid Angel: Summoning Redemption
Acheron: ShemHamForash, Bow Before Me
Black Sabbath: IronMan, Heaven and Hell
Motorhead: Overkill
Children of Bodom: Sixpounder, Follow The Reaper

BTW, the basisst for BLue Oyster Cult is my bass teacher.

Wow another Majestic fan :), that song kick some serious ass (although maybe not my idea of an astounding guitar solo).

the last 3 years Alexi from COB has put out some good solos along with Trey, Dimebag and so on.

I'd say Alexi's prime time was on the first three COB albums, he was stunning there! Really catchy solos, but he's become sorta too predictive lately, as his band... IMO of course. ;)

I'm a sucker for Gary Moore. His playing on songs like 'Parisienne Walkways' & 'Still Got The Blues' send shivers down my spine every listen...so much feeling and so tasteful.

Spur of the moment, I find it hard to think of individual songs that have great guitar solos. The only one that immediately comes to mind is Mathias Jabs solo on Rock You Like a Hurricane, and that's because I heard it earlier today. And Gary Richrath on one of those songs off of Hi Infidelity. Some guy was jamming some old REO at the pump next to mine when I was gassing up.

I'd have to say, speaking strictly in solos, my faves are Blackmore, Dharma, Schenker, Jabs, Rhoads, Oliva. Any of those guys charm me more often than not.

Raven - All For One

My all time favorite solo is Ace's solo on 'Dark Light' from KISS' Music from the Elder! As Hit Parade Magazine said concerning the solo years ago:
"Best solo I've heard in a long fucking time!"

:headbang:

NP: DragonForce - Inhuman Rampage
