...How awesome.... are..... these guys.....

I wish Kelly would get off his ass and stop trying to be hardcore in that new band of his and start Athiest up again.

Atheist stuff to check out:

Brains
Beyond
Mineral

It really depends... What stuff are you into?

Another great song to check out is 'elements'.

It'll slap you straight in the face.

If you're up for some weirdness, check out Samba Briza

Trapped, i saw your music collection in the "what makes you unique" thread and it is safe for me to say i like everything that you said you liked... except for maybe the arabic stuff but i haven't heard any so maybe i actually do like it! And hey i don't think i saw Ozric Tentacles in your list... you like them? I think they are one of the best bands that nobody knows about! Prog rock indeed! I can't even say my favorite style because i like so much... i guess my favorite style is ... METAL :) so i'll check out what you said there. thanx man.

Yeah, i've heard Ozric Tentacles... pretty cool stuff, i just haven't really 'Got into' them.

Have a look on mp3.com for 'Echosilence', they are an instrumental prog-metal band, and they are awesome...

(BTW that wasn't my full list.. that's just bits and parts... I like heaps of proggier stuff too, like Soul Cages etc... but i guessed that no-one had heard of them *shrug* so i didn't mention)

Atheist, fuck I have to check out these guys. I hear they are super proggy.

Isn't the drummer from Cynic, Sean Reinhart, in Atheist? I think I heard that somewhere. Holy sweet shit on a stick, he is absolutely in-fucking-credible. A true talent, a living legend, the most technically proficient player I've ever heard in metal music.

Is he in Atheist? On all albums? Was this before or after Cynic?

What are the Athiest vocals like? I'm thinking like a high shrill raspy scream (which i think is quite cool).

What is the most insanely proggy Athiest album?

Was Sean Reinhart also in Death? When? Are they like Athiest or Cynic? Insanely whacked and proggy?

Lastly, the name: Atheist - how fucking cool is that? It's sorta evil and sacreligious but also very intelligent and thoughtful sounding. Gotta love it, hehe.

long live prog metal,

Satori, meta-prick ;)

Satori: You haven't heard Death or Atheist?? Jesus, where have you been the past 20 years?? Dead or something??

Death and Athiest are Technical-Death metal, strange tempo changes, time changes, crazy guitarwork, amazing drumming.

Check out 'Peice of time' or 'Elements' by Atheist....

Check out 'The sound of perseverance' and 'Human' by Death...

Sean Reinhart played on Death's "Human" album, but he didn't have anything to do with Atheist I am certain...

Also, check out MARTYR, which i mentioned before, they are crazier than BOTH death and atheist.

Death - Technical Death Metal ('Human' up to 'The Sound of Perseverance')

Characterized by Chuck Schuldiner's distinctive guitar-paying and riffing-style. Later Death such as TSOP is well known for strange tempo and time changes, odd bar lengths etc... Chuck is god!! Rip...!)

Atheist - Technical Jazz/Death Metal

Technical Death in the style of 'Death' and 'Cynic', alot more 'Thrash' than 'Death-metal', riffs are alot more stripped down than other Technical Death bands, bass and drums are a BIG focus. Atheist are self proclaimed 'Jazz/death'

Martyr - Technical Death Metal

Extremely talented and genious Technical Death/Thrash from Quebec, these guys are a MUST. These two guitarists are possibly two of the best guitarists and composers to grace the music world... (Trapped in a corner's pick of the day  )

Cynic - Technical Death Metal

Very jazzy metal, complicated timing and riffing, all-round awesome musicianship... "Textures" and "Uraboric Forms" are a great introduction to Cynic

Theory in practice - Technical Prog/Death Metal

"Colonizing The Sun" is crazy, that's all i can say. They mix the raw attitude of black metal with the musical diversity and technicality of prog... Totally Epic.

Psychotic Waltz - Prog Metal

First two albums are the best, there is some really great guitarwork... their later albums opt for simple-er ideas, and more atmosphere, not my cup 'o tea.... There is a big PW influence on Nevermore's "Politics of ecstasy".

Spastic Ink - Technical Prog Metal

can you say CRAZYMOTHERFUCKINGINSANEGUITARWORKANDTIMESIGNATURESTHATBLOWMYFUCKINGMIND..... TWICE!!!??? - (see also watchtower)

Spiral Architect - Technical Prog Metal

Really awesome stuff, extremely technical. Is somewhat like a continuation of where watchtower left off... only they are a pile younger.

I hope that helps...

I'm not really the person to ask about prog, try Metalized on the Nevermore board, he is the resident prog-fan. I'm obsessed with technical death bands like atheist... So if your after really really good musicianship, this is the music you are looking for, there is no-one more talented than these bands...

Remember to check out Martyr!!!

If you have not heard atheist listen to unquestionable presence! this album plain out kicks ass.the bass work is very good/prominant and technical.A absolute must have.

So if you don't have this CD,so yourself a favour and get it now!Not obtainable new but you could get used through ebay!
