Athiest

Though a standard death/thrash band for much of their career, Pestilence rose to near Cynic levels by the time of their fourth album Spheres, incorporating jazz/fusion influences and technical songwriting to a death metal base.

What I find funny about Pestilence, Atheist and Cynic is that they both developed kinda similar sound at the same time. Atheist and Cynic lived in the same area but Pestilence lived all the way in Holland but then again they started to develop such tendencies only after Tony Choy joined the band. Choy btw. has played in all the three aforementioned bands.

I was never really a pestilence fan, their early thrash/death stuff is pretty good, but their prog stuff is a bit... hmm... well.... As much as i hate to say this: "Way out there", a bit strange.

Isn't Atheist's Elements then? IMO that sounds much weirder than Pestilence's Spheres.

nope.

Atheist are just a normal band, incorporating jazz time changes and signatures etc.... but Pestilence used synth guitars and processors etc.

Pestilence didn't do the 'technical' thing very well, it always seemed very 'forced' from them, but for Atheist it was a natural progression in their sound, and they pulled it off amazingly.

Well, it's kinda large a hop from Unquestionable Presence to Elements. Granted the jump from Testimony of the Ancients to Spheres was quite big too. I enjoy both albums but I like Atheist's older work more than their later. Elements jumped much into the jazz and other genres (Samba Briza is quite... interesting) and IMO that makes it sound more out there.

Isn't the drummer from Cynic, Sean Reinhart, in Atheist?

Steve Flynn was always the drummer of Athiest. Bad Ass!
The Cynic connection comes from Tony Choy, who came in to play bass after Roger died. It was a sad time. I live in Bradenton, Kelly's my bro.

Athiest never made a bad album.

whats the difference between posting unsignificant shit on a new thread compared to an old thread? why does it matter so much if a thread is resurrected?
