well, to be honest, I really think we should 'move on' and treat this subject with respect, in terms of: it belongs to the past
and must be remembered, but not "re-live" it like some people do....
Germany of today is VERY different than the Germany of the 40's.... I can't stand people who are still sensitive about it
and refuse to buy german products or ever to go visit Germany... those people really need to move on...
BUT,
Let's not forget, the holocaust was horrible... if anyone should feel bad about it... you know.
 
It's a collective moral hangover. I'd say it's lessened considerably since the unification of Germany, but it's very much still in living memory - physical and human - and so it's very difficult to forget. Arguably it never should be, but at some point a moral disconnect will come about.

Germans don't feel guilty about the Hapsburg Empire, nor Bismarckian Germany, just as the French have forgotten about Richelieu, and the British about our former colonies. Give the whole thing another 50 years and it'll be incredibly removed.
