and that's quite a fuckup here, noone dares to be proud of his country like for example the french or the turks are. if you would be, you are automatically labelled nazi.

I'm not proud of my country at all actually ! I guess most of the French people who find pride in being French can be labelled as right-wing extremists. Maybe not all but most of them yeah. At least all those who have crossed my path so far.

but whats so bad in being proud of ur country? that doesnt mean that u are a fascist... I mean I like my country, there are things I dont like in it but I dont feel bad in living here and I'm really not a right wing extremist... I like other countries and cultures as well...

well i think the thing is to be aware of the difference beetween being proud to be french and conscious of french History. Look back at french History, french people can without any problems says that they have a great and interesting History, i have no problems saying i'm proud to be french because i think i live in a decent country which had achieved lot of many good things and been through many steps and obstacles. Now it doesn t make out of me a nationalist, i'm balanced and aware enough to temper my speech and my beliefs.

For me it is sad to see that french people who are proud of their country are associated with fascism.
Look for example, every body thinks that the fact that Noel Gallagher plays a "Union Jack" Guitar is cool, that Jimi Hendrix plays a "Star Sprangled Banneer" Stratocaster is cool too. But just imagine the reaction if Patrick Rondat starts playing with a guitar with a french flag on it, everibody would think he belongs to Front National! Can't we be proud to be french?

Yeah I agree with both of you but what I wanted to say is that all the peeps I've met who were claiming loud they are proud to be French were people with strong prejudices against strangers or generally dark-skined people.
I'm not proud to be French, neither am I ashamed. I just don't feel particularly attached to this country. I simply don't care.
But Indeed there are worse places in the world to be born.

ah well ok if you have only met those kind of guys then please be smarter than them and temper your conclusions as well cedar ;)

hm, I went to a french school, in fact international school but I never saw that people who were proud of being french or lets say liked their country were fascists...

but the thing with the flag would be quite the same for germany, if u would see a band with lots of german flags on stage u would think they're nationalists, if u see soulfly with their brasilian flags u dont think anything...

Ah yeah Soulfly too, well for me the guitar flag thing is very representative. :Spin:In France the unique place where you can see a french flag with no association to fascism is a football stadium.

if its a western country with loads of immigrants, a country which used to be occupying countries in africa or asia, then the showing of the flat is easily seen as a racist evidence.

ive been thinking about that since that day i was in switzerland and there was this house which had loads of little swiss flags all around it, and i thought if you did that in france youd be called a racist. but arnaud is right, thats because most people using the national symbols and that are racist.

mind you, if people put it low on national pride, there wouldnt be that much wars going on. its like any *insert social/racial group*-pride - it makes differences with other groups clearer and leads to 'strife'.

no wed better hope somnium_in_terrorbis doesnt come across that thread or we're soon getting a 300 line message that will make us sick of the topic
