ah. yes i was aware of those things, but i didn't know they had an actual established name for what it was called.

i'd say originally it was a hoax, which some people thought was entertaining enough to do deliberately afterwards

It seems farfetched to me, but Wikipedia mentions it in the same sentence as the phrase "fundamentalist Christians" so I'm really not surprised that someone took the time to think this up. It seems like a very convenient reason for them to denounce something they disagree with but can't otherwise prove is harmful or objectionable.
