OK...this is pretty stupid, but I can't hardly identify any of the band members in the S/T band photo. The one I THINK is Romeo is so covered in shadow I can't be sure...and I have no clue whatsoever about any of the others...

So...from left to right, who's who?

Miller, Pinnella, Tyler, Romeo, and Rullo

Speaking of a shadow, I think that picture overshadows the music in the album itself....

Actually, I think once you get used to the production--which as a first album and really demo is understandably not good--and Rod Tyler's voice (no, he's not Russ, but he actually CAN sing), it's not a bad album. Unlike The Odyssey, I can actually listen to it straight through and enjoy it.

wow, how can you hate "The Odyssey" that much? I believe that it is a very well put-together album. Sure, Pinella could show up more, but it was meant to be a more metal album along the lines of Dream Theater's "Train of Thought"...it was meant to be heavier and less keyboard-driven...I think that both bands happened to have the same idea with their 2002 and 2003 albums...but that doesn't mean that either album is UNLISTENABLE as a whole work...geeze....also, that is what "The Odyssey" the epic is for...it's for those prog nerds who NEED lost of keyboard work...the rest of the album is what they wanted to make as a metal album...

I don't outright hate The Odyssey...even though I did initially get kind of a bad impression of the band because of it. The problem is I can't listen to it straight through as an album because of the way it's mixed. Some songs are actually very good (the title track, Accolade II, Awakenings come to mind), but I so rarely ever get into the mood to play the whole thing. That makes it my least-listened to SymX album.

The self-titled album, while the mixing is bad, it's at least not painful...and I actually do think the album's somewhat underrated. Oh...and the last reason for liking it is kinda embarrassing to admit...but I have a MUCH easier time singing along with Rod's stuff, because our voices are a bit more similar in range and tone. Trying to sing anything along with Russ...I sound so miserable even to myself that I just have to stop. ;)

(Oddly enough, I actually find Train of Thought significantly easier to listen to straight through than Odyssey.)

I don't know...I just love the whole "Jeckyll and Hyde" track "The Turning" as well as the Poe-inspired "King of Terrors"...by doing this album, they have cemented that they are able to do straight metal very well as well as Prog/Neoclassical. It's cool to hear a favorite progressive band do a straight-up ripping metal tune....also, about the singing, you being female, that's NOT something Rod Tyler should be very proud of...he's in the same range with a woman...same with Labrie...lol...but then again, for early 90s and 80s metal vocalists, it's a common thing...

In Tyler's defense, there ARE definitely a few places where he sings too low for me...if I'm remembering the song title right, "Rapture or Pain" is one of the main examples. Same for LaBrie, I can't always sing in his range, either. ;)

I didn't like this album as much as the SymX classics such as DWOT or V, BUT it has some awesome songs like Accollade 2, The remake of Masquerade and Of course that awesome title track The Odyssey. The 15 dollars was definitely worth that amazing title track :Spin:

But from an "album prespective", it kinda turned me off from listening to SymX for a while.

I don't know how anyone could like the self-titled album more than 'The Odyssey' Don't get me wrong, i've loved symphony x's stuff all the way through, but Rod Tyler really is nothing compares to Russell Allen, voice wise, and well for the positive effect on the band. Russell is a great guy, great musician, if not THE BEST singer I've heard.
The Odyssey is defenetly a good album, so is V, DWOT, TIO, DG, LOTEOF.

I enjoy the odyssey alot, Awakenings, Wicked, Infero, Accolade II, king oF Terrors, The Odyssey!

I know there's some people who may enjoy a group's first album, despite possible production flaws. The flaws may be due to lack of sufficient funds, or just general inexperience in the studio. But ultimately, it's the music itself that probably matters most to the listener. I personally prefer a decent sounding mix, but the raw, unpolished feel does appeal to many. The only one that comes to mind at the moment is the White Stripes. But then, that's an actual quality they're going for.

Most of the time I'm a major stickler for mixing. That's one reason I'm such a huge Ayreon fan, because apparently Arjen Lucassen is as nitpicky about that as I would be if I had the equipment and the knowhow. ;) But there's just something really enticing about S/T that I like. If an album is a band's first, and the songwriting is a wreck, on top of the production being poor (or sometimes even if the production is decent), then I can't stand it. But when the songwriting is solid, even if the production isn't up to later standards, I just can't help enjoying it.
