You might argue that it's a thread that's done to death, but I guess what people would recommend keeps changing anyway.

Having been on a massive metal hiatus since my late teens I've recently got back into metal in a huge way and am looking for new bands. Recently I have been mostly loving (not in order of preference):

Opeth (obviously)
Meshuggah
Dream Theater
Devin Townsend Band
Strapping Young lad
Slayer
Tool
The Haunted

NuMetal (the era I completely skipped) still leaves me completely cold as do wanky emo-ey bands singing about being bullied in stereotypical song structures.

I like many musical genres, as many others on this board also seem to, but what other metal would you suggest, given the above?

Give Nevermore a spin.

Since you're into Meshuggah, I'd highly recommend Fredrik's Sideproject 'Sol Niger Within', IMO it dominates everything Meshuggah have done.

I've also really been digging Blut Aus Nord's later stuff, but I think it's a very niche market they appeal to. Could give them a try, see what you think.

Just to throw another name in there, try some Evergrey. Recreation Day is a good starting point.

Thanks folks. I checked out Ulver recently and quite liked Bergtatt, but did not get on so well with Nattens Madrigal. I know it's supposed to be a bit of a classic, but the guitar sound kept making me think of chainsawing pinkies in the old PC game DOOM.

*shows age* :)

The Haunted is really bad, the whole swedish thrash-death scene it's pretty lame, I recommend you some real Thrash like Exodus, Old Sepultura, Testament, Dark Angel, Deathrow, Sodom, Destruction, Kreator, Holy Moses, Sacred Reich, Coroner and Forbidden

I like Exodus and Sepultura although I don't know them well. I'm not big on The Haunted's more "melodic" stuff, but Made Me Do It is a fine album. They're pretty good live too (imo imo).

Listen to Cult of Luna's latest album. It has a very doomy and eerie vibe and is both beautiful and painfully brutal. Kinda like a slowmotion indie-Opeth roflz.

Btw I was about to buy the latest Evoken album just because NFU said they were good. Then I realized he's just a washed up Kindergarden Cop-celebrity that always writes in small typo to show off he's a very busy man and better than everybody else I mean la-dee-da-gosh darnit would I take advice from someone like that!? The answer could be yes.

Now are Evoken any good? Do they play doom metal? Are their music equal to the horrible flash intro on their homepage?

I usually try and download stuff before buying to make sure I like it. Disappointingly I can't find Enslaved but am currently enjoying Gojira / From Mars To Sirius - cheers bahamut! The Zyklon album isn't bad either :) I've found quite a bit of the other stuff too...

Evoken are good. Sludgy stuff. I heard them a while ago, but dont listen to them really as im never in the mood for it . But if you like doom you will probably like it.

Also Godspeedyoublackemporer what a great band, Any release from them.
Massive Attack are always a nice relaxing listen. Also Mogwai, im really enjoying come on die young at the moment. And the latest akercocke release too.

you guys need to remember that the op hasnt listen to metal in a while. He probably wont like most of this stuff right away.

Heckelgruber: How familiar are you with black, death, and doom metal?

+1 to all five bands.
massive attack will be recording their new album this year, so hopefully we will get something as good as mezzanine. the last album 100th window was good but mezzanine is just so much cooler. maybe it's because tricky wasn't there for 100th window. 100th window gets much more spin from me than any of tricky's solo stuff, though. maybe i won't miss his contribution to massive attack this time around.
my recommendation will be neurosis (especially the albums through silver in blood, times of grace and a sun that never sets). the album they recorded with jarboe on vocals (titled neurosis and jarboe) seems to be my favorite at the moment.

Hmm. Most of my metal-liking actually precedes most of the Black metal scene altogether, so genre distinctions can be innacurate. I couldn't define Doom metal without the help of Wikipedia, I have a rough concept of black metal and death metal is kind of easy to identify because the genre has existed for ages.

As for actual bands (imo of course):

Dimmu Borgir - BM? A bit dull; kind of highly produced, polished boredom for teenagers in facepaint (no offense intended to any fans).

Morbid Angel - death - great stuff (early albums), lots of energy, shame about some slightly manky production.

Bloodbath - pretty straight Death; better-sounding than a lot of it.

I guess usually death metal bands need to have some kind of edge or something interesting about them, because a lot of the poorer ones seem to sound quite similar.

So, to cut a long-winded answer short: a bit but not very familiar. :)

Runemagick for some nice death/doom

:O Someone else who's actuallty heard of Runemagick?

Melodic Death: Early Arch Enemy, Dark Tranquillity, In Flames (first 6 studio albums only!), The Haunted, At the Gates, Burst (arguably).

Black Metal: Enslaved, Immortal, Emepror, (recent) Darkthrone, Bathory, Graveland (such a shame Rob Darken's a Nazi shithead because he makes some great music), Wodensthrone.

Pure Death: Morbid Angel, Death (Mantas, Control Denied, arguably tech metal), Nile, Death in Blood, Blunt Wound Trauma, (some) Naplam Death (but all their grind and hardcore punk stuff is cool too)

Power Metal: Mano'war, Blind Guardian, Rhapsody, Dragonforce (arguably happy hardcore) Powerquest, Demons and Wizards.

Metalcore: (derided because it's 90% dirge like Heaven Shall Burn, which is a shame ' cause their name is sooo cool) Throwdown, Darkest Hour, Shadows Fall.

Power/Death: Wintersun, Ensiferum...(it's just Viking Metal really)

Folk/Black: Holyblood.

Prog Metal: (arguably stuff that sounds like Opeth...ish) Katatonia, Threshold.

That's not great, bit it's a start. People are bound to argue over where I've placed these bands.

I haven't listened to them yet, but people till me I'll like Nevermore...give them a whirl.
