Bands that Resemble Old D.T.

Epoch Of Unlight reminds me of old DT in places. Much more emphasis on speed though.

Agalloch's Pale Folklore album has a lot of those acoustic melodies backed up by sparse, not-too-heavy riffing; kind of like, say, "A Bolt Of Blazing Gold" or 'Through Ebony Archways" off Skydancer..

What are At The Gates like?

Oh, and recently I heard the russian melodic death metal band "Seducer's Embrace", and it sounded a lot like DT. I was delighted, really.

No one has mentioned Detonation... there album "an epic defiance" was mega rare over here but one day I walk into my local metal CD store and there it was... (Im aware that there was absolutely no point in that anacdote)... But yeah, it sounds alot like early DT only its got more modernized parts. Like if DT had the same Ideas now with better production- thats Detonation :p

@Onyx: I'm not good at describing music, i guess i'd have to go for swedish death metal (heh), but they're certainly worth a try. You can start with the "Slaughter of the Soul" album, or if you just want to start with a song, i'd suggest "Blinded by Fear" or "Cold" from that album.

Best song on SOtS is World of lies IMO. The first time I heard that was totally a turning point for me. I was a pantera fanatic until i was like 13 then I bought "With fear I kiss the burning Darkness"<Also at the Gates :kickass: then I heard about SOtS and I needed it... That was the day I was truly born... the DAY I heard that album... of course then I got in to DT who are (ahem) better ;).

Opeth "Morning Rise" is similar to early DT, so is at the gates "terminal spirit disease" and "with fear I kiss the blah blah Blah Blah" But you all knew that I suppose.

yeah, with fear i kiss the burning darkness is simply amazing... almost Skydancer worthy...
I could also say Children of Bodom - Follow the Ripper... but the feeling of darkness isn't quite there in my opinion, guitars and synth more in the power metal fashion perhaps...

@legende: well, i see where you're coming from - i guess that rhapsody's records are the best example of that... manowar might excel at stating the obvious, but rhapsody are way better at using a standard set of words while giving the impression that they don't even know what these words mean...
