I limit my bass tracks all the time. If you're having issues with limiting to the point of "unidentified humming" you should split the bass in to two tracks and treat them separately. LP one track at 200Hz and limit the fuck out of it so you have a nice, solid low end. For the other track, HP at around 200Hz and apply a bit of overdrive to bring it out. EQ and compress to taste. This should help get a bass sound that has solid low end but also stands out in the mix.
