Bass effect processor?

Does anybody know about a good rack bass effect processor? I will be playing mainly metal. My budget is a about 500$.

I was looking for something kind of like a newer version of the Line 6 Bass XT POD. It seems like there are not too many SPECIFICALLY designed for bass?

Do you need effects or just a preamp/tone shaping box? If you're doing straightforward metal you might not need effects, or maybe just a good compressor if you're not distorting your bass, but that depends entirely on what you're doing.
