Bass Help

I got some bass tracks from the bassist in my band today to throw into a mix.

Problem is... There are peaks on the track which I think are the strings popping and subsequently making an unwanted and quite frankly horrible pop on the bass track.

I tried to remove them/ make them less obvious with EQ and a noise gate but it's not working very well. Suggestions on how to get rid of this?

I'm new to this so if I am missing something obvious here when trying to remove them feel free to slap me and send me on my way aha.

I have to do this at live gigs when the bassist hits his strings off the pole pieces on the pickups. Eq isn't going to work for this generally. Much better off using a limiter to just clamp down on the peaks.
