Bathory - One Rode to Asa Bay

Definitely one of the best songs ever, and my favourite from Bathory. Monotonous? Nahhh.

It has only just beeeeeeeeeeeeguuuuuuun! :D

So, the question is simple. Is this masterpiece the most epic metal song ever?

Well it all depends on the ear of the beholder :) , so picking two of your words:

  1. No, it's not a masterpiece
  2. No, it's not the most epic
Again for me a masterpiece and an epic means different. What I'm going to say in favor of the song is:
  1. I'm very surprised with it. My contact with Bathory was eons ago with the debut and UTSOTBM and didn't like it. I knew Quorthorn changed tby the time of "Hammerheart" but I didn't expect such clean vocals and melodies.
  2. It's kinda monotonous but I feel it like a doom song and therefore it clicks with me since some doom can be kinda monotonous for those who don't like the sub-genre (which I do).
And before you ask :Saint: :
  • Masterpiece: Black Sabbath - 'Heaven And Hell'
  • Epic: Warlord - 'Deliver Us From Evil'; Blind Guardian - 'Time Stands Still (at The Iron Hill)'; Iron Maiden - 'Rime Of The Ancient Mariner', Thin Lizzy - 'Emerald', Motorhead - 'Death Or Glory', Saxon - 'Crusader' , etc.
NP: Laaz Rockit - 'Silent Scream'

Everyone who has listened to Bathory knows what the thread title means.

For whom that haven't listened to it yet, there is a solution ----> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hDpc-831GPs

Discuss.

To your question, Yes. The song is just awesome, especially where he quietly says something and says "Its only.........just begunnnnnnnnnnn".

Fuckin awesome.

@ Wyvern: I also don't like Bathory's style in the first albums, but "Hammerheart", "Twilight of the Gods", the two "Nordlands" and even "Blood, Fire, Death", are masterpieces of epic metal.

And yes, I think that the only heavy metal albums that reaches the epic feeling of "Hammerheart" and "Twilight...", are Manowar's "Into Glory Ride" and "Hail to England". And, as we dicuss for songs, "Battle Hymn" and "Bridge of Death" by the gods of metal are two of my favourite and most epic tracks. But, IMO, they don't reach "One Rode to Asa Bay".

good song but not the most epic... some epic ones:

Black Sabbath - Children of the Sea

Iron Maiden - Alexander the Great

Metallica - Orion (even though it's a instrumental)

Ozzy - Diary of a Madman (the song)

My Dying Bride - Probably the whole Dreadful Hours album and other songs on other albums

There are other songs but those are the ones I can think of off the top of my head... Bathory has other epic songs especially on the Hammerheart and Nordland II albums....
