if they emerged out of today's music scene, you wouldn't give them a second thought. everyone just thinks they're great because they're history. it's a prime example of a band defined by their publicity.

If Led Zeppelin came out today, do you think anyone would give a shit about them? Probably not dumbass. The Beatles were in the 60's. They pretty much invented a whole new sound. Nobody sounded like that in the 60's. That's why they're admired. Sure their music was a little poppy, but what wasn't back then? And its still good. Timeless music is hard to come by.

This is the most annoying argument ever.

John Lennon had more song-writing talent in his pinky than every past or present member of King Crimson combined. I love King Crimson, but nobody could write a song like the Beatles could. Pop or not, musically simplistic (yeah, right) or not, they were the best.

once again, you're confusing topicality with talent. just because you find lennon important doesn't mean he was good.

for the recod, i happen to find led zeppelin medocre, as well.

regardless, you're contradicting yourself. saying the Beatles were temporal but timless. riiiiight. try again, friend.

IMPORTANT IS NOT THE SAME AS TALENTED, FAGHATS!

i'm just curious, why would you ask about the beatles on an opeth forum? i like the beatles...but i think this should just go to the non metal forum, you'd probably get better replies there.:p

your out of your mind , the beatles were basically the first prog band. Yes they were popular with good reason. If you want overrated try Kiss.

Exactly!

But not only were they the first prog band, but they were also the first to incorporate "world" into their music. Would a band such as Dead Can Dance have existed without the tunes that Harrison contributed?

Digging this one up from its grave but...

Just had to mention that Sgt. Peppers was the first CONCEPT ALBUM.

Yeah, The Beatles weren't important at allllll. Not original, talented, or timeless either.

Ah, NO. They are a part of history due to the greatness of their music. You dont hear 13,867,026 people praising, say, 60s bands such as Gary Puckett & the Union Gap, do you?

They wouldn't have ever garnered such publicity unless they were worthy of it.

Too many "angry metal" fans just can never accept the fact that a non metal band CAN make great music.

Ahem. You DO realize that in 20-30 years this same twisted logic will be used to argue the "greatness" of Britney's music in comparison to ummm....Opeth's....don't you???

Luckily most metal fans are astute enough to treat this comment with the contempt it deserves and not dignify it with a response.
[Ooooops!!!]

Q: If you knew the same guy was involved in the recording of the following 3 songs:- "Mull Of Kintyre", "Ebony And Ivory", "The Girl Is Mine".....would you a) Knight him...or b) Shoot him? ;)

Ah, again, NO. Much like many, if not MOST so-called "pop" stars, Britney will be long forgotten. Do people today talk about the merits of "musical gods" New Kids on the Block, or Duran Duran. I dont think so.

Most, you say? Perhaps, but clearly not *all*. Case in point:
Just last week, two mates of mine dropped by my place for a few beers. Both are sefl-proclaimed "metal-heads". As we swilled some Bass Ale, I walked over to my stereo & loaded 3 CDs. The first was "Deliverance". They, of course, being Opeth fans, loved this choice! The second CD was Led Zeppelin's "Led Zep III". Now, only one of these fellas is a Zep fan. He was familiar with the music. The other, however, had only heard "of the band", but not the actual music. As the CD played, he really got into it, especially liking the epic blues track "SInce Ive Been Lovin You". Two thumbs up, he told me! Hooray, a convert to the mighty Zep!!
Then, while he ventured off to the bathroom for relief from the beers he'd had, I quietly switched off to CD #3: "Abbey Road" by none other than the Beatles. I played the great track "She's So Heavy". In the meantime, my buddy comes back from his bathroom respite. He sits down, we bullsh*t for a few moments, when he finally asks "Wow, this Zeppelin is REALLY awesome", and "this song kicks major ass!", etc! Boy, was I excited! My bud was actually digging, not only Led Zep, but the Beatles as well!! Of course, at this point, I had to come clean & reveal the true identity of the band playing! Then I dropped the truth - I said, "Mike, sorry, but this isn't Led Zep. This is the Beatles!"!.
His jaw dropped. He began to rant about how much he hated them, being "silly pop stars". Yet, only 2 minutes before, he was praising the awesome "power" & "emotion" of the great band!!!!
In a nutshell, upon hearing the music - and listening to it for what it is, without a preconceptions - he LOVED IT. But as soon as he knew who it was, said preconceptions took over & he, of course, just said "what he's been told to say", and that is that "they suck, blah, blah blah".
Now, I 've seen this many times before with many of my metal frieends! In fact, as a young metalhead many years ago, I was guilty of the same crime! Of course, not all people think like this, but many more do than you might think!

Again, this thread was speaking of the BEATLES! No mention was made of any of the solo material that said band members may have made 10 years after they broke up!

  Er yeah, I'm aware of that. Still couldn't resist firing the question in though, for the sake of a little frivolity in a seemingly out of place thread.

And your answer was.....? ;)
