Be afraid... be very afraid...

This is some local hick midwest judge's ruling about the Wiccan religion, not some giant gov't conspiracy. Jesus Christ you all sound like broken records over and over and over again. Wah, wah, wah, wah, wah.
What if it gets appealed all the way to the Supreme Court, who then sides with this judge? Then we have a national precedent. Unlikely, but definitely possible.

Well, my conclusion that such a thing won't happen in any province of Canada or in any local municipality is very likely to be true.

Sure, there are no idiots in any form of local gov't whatsoever in your gov't, only in ours. Your well thought out and formulated argument has won me over. I'm convinced.

Doesn't matter to you, you're Canadian bound.
Yes because if it doesn't affect me DIRECTLY it doesn't matter, right? That's one of my biggest issues with America today. Nobody gives a shit about anything unless it hurts them. That's why nobody gives a shit about the poor, that's why health coverage isn't free to those that can't afford it, why drug addicts are locked away instead of put into rehab (unless you're rich of course), and why Wal-marts destroy every small business that gets near them so people can pay $0.13 less for a bottle of shampoo.

Yet I'M the bad guy because I want to leave this selfish vacuum of a country.

if you haven't been paying attention, the Republican party, which controls the presidency, the house and the senate, is controlled increasingly by right wing idealogues who believe they owe their power to christian fundamentalists. Frist, Santorum, Bush, Delay...they all are increasingly afraid of the power of the theocrats, and operate accordingly. That's why they jumped into the Schiavo mess, because they thought the right to lifers at any cost would rise up and shower them with political capital. Didn't happen tho...turns out most americans don't want the pols messing in what should be the affairs of a family.

there is likely to be a supreme court vacancy very soon, and watch Bush nominate some wacko to fill it. Frist and his cohorts tried to ban the filibuster this past week and luckily enough moderate Republicans rebelled to keep it from happening; the conservatives had some pretty outrageous judicial candidates waiting in the wings and the Repubs wanted no part of open debate.

You Americans had best watch what's going on here; this is how a nation's civil liberties slowly erode. Do you want sodomy outlawed? Don't forget, oral sex is considered a form of sodomy. first they come for the gays...then it'll be the next group...it doesn't take a weatherman to know which way the wind is blowing.

(snipped to save bandwidth)

I couldn't agree more with everything you said. I now live in a country where political power is being divied up based on whether or not you support gay marriage. Gay marriage!?!? It's beyond comprehensible that anyone cares what two consenting adults do behind closed doors.

This country has been through some tough times, and has seen the pendulum of power swing back and forth. However, I think America's best days are behind it. I hope that's not so, but I have a bad feeling that it is. That we rewarded Bush with a 2nd term, is completely mind boggling.

while that article is totally fucked up, I can't help but think how you all would be reacting had the judge decreed that the parents could not teach their son Christian values and beliefs.

I became fascinated by the RAF and read everything I could find on them, including a really good book called Hitler's Children, so named because these were young people who were the kids of the first German generation to begin experiencing some prosperity after the devastation of WWII...
I think I even had a bit of a sick crush on Ingrid Schubert, a young german doctor who had joined the terrorists and committed suicide in Stadelheim...even though she was long dead by the time I was in college.

that's just it; parents should be able to pass on whatever religious beliefs they hold dear, and a judge shouldn't be able to prohibit it unless it involves harm or abuse.
