Symphony X was good, played 6 tunes to a fairly mellow crowd, but eventually won them over. Got some nice cheers, the boys looked very comfortable on the larger stage, I'd love to see them eventually get to the point where they can pack in a good house at venues like this. Their sound was fairly muffled, at least from where I was (front of loge, dead center).

Queensryche absolutely blew them away, that's all there is to say. If you didn't think so, you either a) blindly worship Symphony X or b) are 18 years old. Or probably both.

Did a song materialize out of thin air just for you? The set was 5 songs:

Inferno
Wicked
Communion
Awakenings
Of Sins and Shadows

I was the ONLY person standing on the floor, right in front of Lepond, going nuts, so they could see that they had at least ONE real metal fan that was really getting into it (my friend was doing the same, only in the lodge). We left after SymX. We were originally going to stay for 1 QR song, but neither of us are big QR fans and theres no way in hell anyone could follow OSaS. The only band that has successfully done that was Blind Guardian.

edit: might I add that I HATE seated venues. Really sucks the energy out of the crowd IMO. I'd much rather see a band in a club.

I got there late, right at the end of Communion... apparently I didnt miss anything I haven't seen 3 times already. Awakenings was very cool, you could actually hear Pinella for once. We left a couple of songs into QR since we werent familiar at all with their stuff

Edit: I would also like to add my hatred for seated venues, I dont care if the sound is better or if the stage is bigger, its simply not as fun.

the one issue i had with QR at Aavalon and Hampton Beach was the set list set up...all newer stuff first( mostly, as it was mixed with really old stuff) then the 2nd half of the show explodes with O:M.. yer loss i guess ,cuz they sounded awesome:hypno: :hypno:

Sorry, but since you paid $60 or so for 5 songs, and then left for the BETTER band, I can only assume you're an absolute moron. There's no other explanation.

I didn't pay for the ticket, it was a gift....and either way, the better band is Symphony X...of course I'm not going to bother to continue arguing with you on that subject matter, seeing as how you continue to trash Bodom in the BM thread while they're my favorite band (aside from SymX), its obvious we don't share the same opinion about bands.

Be nice, no need for insults.

Actually, Symphony X KICKED THEIR ASS.

I was unfamiliar with Queensryche, and Im glad I didnt buy their albums before the show. The Tribe thing, and the acoustic set put me to sleep, and the singer turned me off when he did his Cowboy twirl thing in the second song

After the Acoustic 3, they did Mindcrime with Pamela Moore? she looked good =), Mindcrime/Encore was good, I liked it.The song open I think it was was cool. It was a good show, not exactly my style, but to say QR kicked Symphony X's ass is wrong

I belive Mr. Moliti says it best, that the only band that can adequately follow Symphony X is Blind Guardian. Case Closed.

Like Yngvai, my ticket was a gift, so when I sit there through 5 terrible songs , I see no reason to stay. Unfortunately they supposedly played all their good stuff during the second half of the show, oh well, shit happens. And drop the elitist shit

Queensryche blew away Symphony X?? What concert were you listening to? Symphony X embarassed QR, especially their fans. The old guys next to me were laughing at Symphony X until they played Wicked, then they shut their mouths. When QR took the stage, the singer came out with a freaking Tambourine! It was horrible. We stayed for 3 or 4 songs and got the hell out of there, completely satisfied with the meager set that Symphony X was given. 2 hours of QR? They sucked, plain and simple. I was completely unimpressed with every note they played. Michael Romeo could have outplayed both of QR's old-ass guitarists with one hand...literally (you ever see Romeo tap? It's unreal) If you understand what music truly is when it translates onto a piece of leger paper, then you will understand why Symphony X is the best, every musician in the band is as top notch as they come (perhaps you missed Jason Rullo tearing up the drums).

"Queensryche absolutely blew them away, that's all there is to say. If you didn't think so, you either a) blindly worship Symphony X or b) are 18 years old. Or probably both."

I think that we should change that to:

"Symphony X absolutely blew them away. If you didn't think so, you either a) are 40 years old, and can't get past the glory days of tight leather or b) are utterly tone deaf, and must have missed the BRILLIANT show that came before the shitty headliners."

Eh - Actually, QR wasnt that bad, after the acoustic set. Their encore was good, saving the best for last.

the whole Tribe thing and acoustic set lulled me to sleep, but SX was deff better.

They were well received, and got a great response, and I saw quite a few more SX T-shirts walking out of the Show, then when I walked in =).

And hearing Awakenings Live Finally was so great, I COULD HEAR PINELLA!!!

If Only they let SX go for 60, it'd have been that much better =)

Anyways, here is how I felt about Symphony X's performance:

I was sitting in the first row of the upper balcony, dead center. The only sound issue I had was the bass, Lepond's Ampeg was not really enough to kick the sound up to where we were. Romeo's 2 Mesa Boogie's did the trick quite nicely, and the PA took good care of Rullo on Drums, and Pinella on Keyboards. Russell Allen had an incredible night, he hit his notes perfectly. Especially notable was his usual vocal break in "Wicked", the notes he improved were spectacular.

Inferno was incredible, Rullo ripped the drums apart, he had at least an 8 piece set with about 10 different cymbals (it took 3 racks connected together to fit all of the hardware). I have no idea how he can play seperate double bass parts, which are totally different from what he does with his hands. No one can change the feel like him, and his fills show utter mastery of the set.

Wicked as mentioned before was great, as always. It is a song that was very good on the album, but is sick when played live (much like Awakenings is sick on the album, but is never 100% on the stage...although last night may have changed that)

Communion was beautiful, Pinella has some real skill, he was all over the 3 keyboards he stacked, I love when he plays 2 keyboards at a time. Lepond is a sick, sick man on bass. Leopond basically strolls around the stage jamming out the craziest bass riffs, his speed is amazing, most people cannot play as fast as he does with a pick, let alone 2 fingers!

Awakenings was insane. I have always wanted to hear it live, and now I can die happy. It was the "roughest" of all of the songs, it is very obviously near-impossible to play, there is so much going on. I wish that Romeo would find a rockin back-up guitarist so that songs like Awakenings would be easier to do. Either way- amazing, Romeo's solo was intense at the end of the song. Russel Allen pulled out all of the stops here as well.

Of Sins and Shadows- I was sad when they announced their last song (which is basically always "Shadows". I really wish that I had heard Smoke and Mirrors, Out of the Ashes, or even Masquerade (which they have played live before as an encore with the Damnation Game...soooo awesome). Of Sins and Shadows was awesome, again, Romeo and his insane-ass solos, you've never really heard a guitarist play until you hear Romeo or Yngwie show you the meaning of the word "notes".

It was a short set, but getting to see them at the massive Beacon Theater was well worth the price of admission. I hope that the new album will continue in the "heavier" direction that "The Odyssey" has taken them towards.

Both bands put on a good show. I kinda knew that SX's set would only get 5 songs. But still. It was right in MY neighborhood, and if this was the sticks, it'd be my backyard basically. I saw quite a few Symphony X fans, which was nice.
After they played, I had one QR fan say to me, "Man, I'd heard some Symphony X, but I had no idea."

The sound was alright, overall. Better in some places than others- for both bands. I thought Romeo's guitar in Inferno wasn't that clear or pronounced. But it improved afterwards. "Awakenings" was nice to see performed again. And you could pretty much hear Pinnella which was good too. I do think that the chorus needs a little bit of work though; but it's amazing that they pull off the song live anyway. I could hear LePond louder than anybody else. At first, I couldn't hear Russell all that well until his little solo at the tail end of "Wicked".
Rullo was awesome as always.

A really nice show. I just wish it hadn't ended so soon. And I got fitshaced naturally.:)

at the keswick theater, there was some MAD bass problems at the end of communion. i dont know what the crap it was, feedback or whatever. *Meedleyx10* leaned over to me and said "dude, im gonna need some new insides now." it was some crazy bass though. as always, they played an awesome show.

Well, I paid $120 for four tickets to see Symphony X play six songs the first night in Chicago. And did I stick around for Queensryche? Hell no. I remember when I had to stand through their boring 90-minute set last year just to see Dream Theater get on stage.

Every member of Symphony X has a one up on their respective members in Queensryche (technically). Now, do I think seeing six Symphony X songs for $120 is worth it? Absolutely, because they're my favorite band...and because I got to hear Church Of The Machine and Awakenings for the first time in almost two years.

Don't come on this board spreading your message of how much you think Queensryche kicks Symphony X's ass. Seriously, man, that's as immature as a metal fan tearing up the N'Sync boards...it's just stupid.

Is it just me, or does anyone else notice how whenever SymX tours, their fans get into flame wars with the fans of the bands they toured with? i.e. Stratovarius, Devin Townsend, and now QR. I think it is simply ridiculous. It is natural that some people will enjoy QR more, even if the majority of forum members, myself included, will have enjoyed SymX more and have no problem with paying high ticket prices for a 40 min set. Such an act does not make us morons- we are simply loyal to our favorite band.

Well, this isnt really SX fans vs. QR fans... its more SX fans vs. markgugs, even though he's not actually taking part in the arguement. So its really more like SX fans flaming markgugs... yeah thats it. The real reason arguements with QR fans havent broken out is because they are all old and don't use computers

Agreed!!!!!
You've said it !!! "Metal Chick"!!
I've paided for 3 shows of this tour, just for SymX, and would gladly do it again, if only had the time..:Spin:
