since I wasn't really satisfied with the roughmix I did of this one female-fronted song I started from scratch again a,d it's 100% better this time (IMHO)...

before I send this out for mastering I'd like to hear your honest opinion though:

Dreamer's Reality

(the strings are not the final ones....just HALionOne placeholders)

oh yeah, and this is just a roughmix(pseudomaster..I'll automate the overheads a bit, tame the sub etc...

the only thing i would comment on is that i find the vox to be a tiny bit too "in your face" - i dont know what you could do to reduce that harshness - it could just be the musicians voice style

yeah, I already tried to soften it with some tape and 1176 style comp with rather fast attack and slow release (outboard)...
it's even way more "in yer face" on the other songs

The kick is yummy:) Details? The snare is solid but, IMO, too loud. Too much low end and compression result in some overload that can be heard clearly at1:47. The vocals get a bit drowned, I'd try to bring them more in your face, experiment - you can even try using waves L1. Not saying I'm right and you're wrong, you know ;) just trying to help. Oh, and the guitars are thick and juicy

yeah, it was just a very rough mastering and went a bit overboard there :heh:, most of those issues will be fixed with the final master.
I'm actually thinking about making the vox a bit less upfront ;)

guitars are 2 tracks of 5150 and 2 tracks of krankenstein. leads are Powerball.
Kick is a blend of different kicks (including the kits own).
Snare is the original snare with a bit fat city if I recall that correctly.

Sounds great Lasse!! Like I said, I love this kind of music. There's just one thing I'd personally do (and realize it's just a subjective taste thing): To me, with this nice big sound, and this style of music (and her type of voice), I like to hear a little more effects on the vocals. I know you've got a delay on there. But intead of a tight, confined mono sound, something wider...to give it more depth and drama. And maybe the bass to be a little more prominent and deeper instead of just blending in with the guitars. But that really depends on the bass lines that were played. But damn, who am I?? ;) If my recordings sounded ANYWHERE near this good, I wouldn't be asking people around here to help me. :)

By the way, love that kick. I'd like to hear this whole project when done!

thanks.
yeah, that bassguitar is actually ridiculously loud, ..it's just playing the same notes etc as the guitars most of the time, so it just becomes one wall instead of sounding like separate instruments.
... depends on the basser and the bass as well though (I love the growling gnarly sounds of warwick for example, this bass was rather "round" sounding though).

some of the other songs have different basslines..like countermelodies etc, when you hear them you'll tell me to turn that bass down cause it's pretty much as loud as the guitars, lol.

about the vocals...yeah, I've tried that as well, was ok for some songs, sucked for others..... I just tried to find some kind of compromise-sound to keep a bit of consistency throughout the songs.

I'm with grywolf627, I would personally add some delay to the female leads, but I totally get if it doesn't work. I trust you've tried stereo delay with something like L-150ms and R-300ms?

Or you could spruce it up some seriously tweaked reverb...Sarah Brightman/Celtic Woman/Haley Westenra-esq huge sounding reverb.

Other than that it's beautiful. Great work as always.

there's quite some 1/4 delay on it...I did just raise the Hall a bit though...will post an update in like 20 mins ;)

I can only listen with these cheap headphones here at work, but I'm only hearing a very subtle difference. Maybe I'm imagining things, but every once in a while I think I hear a subtle "stereo-ness" to the vocal effect. Maybe just a litttttle more? I know I'm nagging you about this like it's my song...so don't mind me. ;) Haha It's your call (and the band's). It sounds GREAT. Man, I really like that guitar sound! I like the singer's voice, I just wish she sang some parts with a little more power, instead of staying so soft all the time. What's the name of this band (forgive me if I missed that somewhere)? This is the kind of music I'm using to slowly pull my wife over to metal. LOL
