Before Metal...

Oh man... i used to be fuckin' obsessed with limp bizkit and korn. Also papa roach. Oh, and metallica (i am no longer a supporter, so this is before i liked metal still... though i consider load to be some of their best work still... best produced and stays well within lars's drumming ability... a lot of the songs aren't bad either). From metallica's garage inc. album i got into mercyful fate and king diamond, then iced earth, blind guardian, hammerfall, symphony x, opeth, then i branched from there. Now i like most anything. "Cept hardcore death metal like cannibal corpse or hardcore black metal... like the shitty production stuff. Also, power metal with shitty vocals, which is a lot of the bands, though i still like my fair share of really bad music.

:wave:Since I was the youngest in the family, I grew up w/alittle of everything.

My Dad: Bluegrass, Gospel
My mom: oldies- beebop type music like "at the hop" type songs u get it.

My oldest bro.. classic rock- Eagles, styx, Rush, boston, Led Zep. Fasway, ect.

My sister: country (older country) not this new stuff.

My other bro: mainly like my oldest, mostly classic rock.

ME:???? METAL!!!! and everything else..HA!

The first record I remember listening to as a fan was "Bat Out of Hell II" (MeatLoaf) when I was 9. Then I discovered Queen and my life changed forever. I was their biggest fan and for one entire year I listened to them at least once a day and I felt guilty listening to any other band. Brian May was also the one who first got me into playing guitar (age of 13).

Then I heard "Sweet Child 'O Mine" and got into hardrock (G'NR, Aerosmith and others alike). After that (when I was about 14), my cousin got me into Metallica and I was obsessing over Kirk for a while.

Having discovered metal I started looking outside the Metallica frame and got really into Bruce Springsteen (who I still worship) and I was also a huge Helloween fan for a while.

When I started High School I met this amazing teacher who is the drummer in Sweden's best progressive rock band (Mind's Eye), and he gave me a list of three records that changed my whole life (once again); Dream Theater "Images and Words", Rush "Presto" and Queensrÿche "Empire". Symphony X came a year later with the realease of "V".

During this time I also took a quick stroll in the power metal woods with bands such as Nightwish, Sonata Arctica, even a bit of Rhapsody I'm afraid. Unfortunatelly I found nothing lasting there and I set my standards a bit (understatement) higher. The last band to be added to my favorite bands list is TOTO.

I listened to Led Zeppelin and especially their '4' album. Before that I was into new age (Mike Oldfield, Vangleis)...
And at some time I became a DJ Bobo fan. :)

So macy... lemme get this straight... you don't like sonata arctica or rhapsody, but you like toto??? Now, i am not one to say anything about other's musical tastes, and i am DEFINATELY NOT bashing you or what you listen to, but i find this rather odd as rhapsody ownz (forget the lyrics, they are awesome) and sonata arctica are just killer... despite what EVERYONE on this board seems to think :p. Remember, no hard feelings, no judgement... just poking fun... remember, i like hammerfall.

Well, I guess that says it all. TOTO is far superior to anything named Sonata and Rhapsody, there is nothing those guys can't play. I guess you've only heard "Africa" and songs alike. Well, I should inform you there is LOTS more to the band than that. Just the fact that Steve Lukather has played on more than a thousand records should tell you something about their talent.

Besides, I didn't say I disliked those bands, what I meant was that it's fun for a while but gets tiresome because power metal is all about clichés and it gets a bit repetitive to hear the same old ta-ka-ta-ta-ka-ta drum thing all the time. Some people want variety. And there are few bands as diverse as TOTO.

ah, at least you didn't bash me ruthlessly :) no, about the only song i have herd by toto is africa, so i am judging simply by that and their reputation... don't worry though, like i said i am not starting shit or bashing you or toto. As for sonata arctica, i think they show... erm... some diversity. Sure they have their jug jigga jug jigga jug jigga jug songs, but they also have some great songs like "my land" and "gravenimage" that just kick balls.

Yeah... what do you think of Cradle of Filth's version of hallowed be thy name? Personally i think that it kicked maiden's ass as well, mainly for the mood it set. I found maiden's version too happy and upbeat for the darkness of the song, wheras CoF brought the perfect atmosphere while still remaining true to the original in almost every way (solo's and all)

Don't know, haven't heard it, but I'm sure it's better. I'm sorry for all the Maiden fans, but I really don't understand why there is so much fuss about them. They ain't that good!

LOL... i personally like maiden's "popular" songs. A best of will do my cd collection (even though i own 3 albums). Actually, i like brave new world, but the other albums were pretty poor other than a few standout tracks. Number of the beast... about half the album is good, the rest (including the title track... i don't see what the hell the big deal is) is crap. Utter crap.

Got that right. I thought "Brave New World" was OK, but they stole a riff in "Wicker Man" from Queensrÿche :Shedevil:

The only old song I like is "Run To The Hills" for it's catchy chorus, but mainly I think they're a pretty standard metal band, OK sound quality on the records, no particularly impressive production, off-beat live and same old riffs in every song.

Oh oh, I think I hear a legion of Maiden fans marching down the hallway. Better run before they start flaming me. :p

he he... like i said, i like some of maiden's stuff (and wicker man was incidently my least favorite track on that album) and i am still going to buy the next album, but by no means am i goign to defend them to the death.... i appreciate greatly what they have done for metal though. I have the same thoughts about slayer... they were good in their time and did great things to push extreme metal in the right direction, but by no means to i much enjoy their music. Some songs, and in very small doses mabey, but overall...no.

My first cd which I bought when I was 10 or something, was a cd of a pop/dance-group. It's such a stupid cd, my brothers are still joking about it :bah:

My brothers listened (and they still do) to Metallica, Iron Maiden and later Dream Theater, LTE.
I thought it was shit what they listened and I had this stupid cd. I played flute. I heard everyday metallica and iron maiden and all, so I actually started to like them. So 3 years ago I decided to sell my flute and buy a drumkit. After I could play all the tallica songs I wanted something new. So later I listened to Fear Factory, Symphony X, Dream Theater, Opeth, etc.

I also like to listen to jazz music (but not for too long), classical music and altenative music. :)

I think metal would do just fine without them. If it wasn't Maiden it'd be some other band. Besides, you can't like a band out of gratitude (meaning people in general) and they haven't done anything for me so. I'm saying this because people often defend bands by saying that they were important for the evolution of the particular genre. But no matter how important Hendrix was, I'll never like him because his music is boring to me.

BTW, I'm glad you didn't turn out to be an evil disrespecting bastard who thinks Maiden is da shait because I'm sick of arguing.

I listened to New Wave and Punk before moving on to rock and metal. Metal came when I was about the age of 12, when a friend of mine showed me his Pantera stuff. Till about a few years, I was listening to black, death and goth metal.

Progressive rock/metal came to me as a good subgenre to explore when I was 15. The love affair has stayed on since then. :D

Well, it's the Funky, my dear!
I listened to Earth, Wind and Fire, the Commodores and Parliament/Funkadelic and other soul stuff. But I've always listened to Queen and Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, the Doors, Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix and so on. Then I heard Van Halen and Kiss and finally, the first e.p. from Iron Maiden, with the great live version of 'I've got the fire' on it. that did it, basically. Especially after Number of the Beast. Prog came way, WAY later, after an ex of mine turned me onto Psychotic Waltz and Dream Theater. Then came Fates Warning and then Sym X. This concludes our thirty year span.

Believe it or not, I was always into this type of music. I listened to other stuff when I was a kid like 80's pop or disco, but the first record I ever bought when I was 7 yrs old was Europe's Final Countdown, which to me, sounded pretty metal at that time. So yeah, I started with lots of glam/AOR bands such as Dokken, Europe, Journey and similar stuff. Later on, I got into classic metal such as Sabbath, Priest, Rainbow, UFO, Purple, Savatage etc. etc., so I'd say Symphony X is one of very few bands I listen to that was formed in the nineties. I may be only 19 years old, but I'm an old fart at heart.

Before I got into metal, I listened to Michael Jackson, top 20 pop and Eminem. Then I bought Limp Bizkits "Significant Other", before anyone knew of them over here, mind you. I heard "Break Stuff" on the weekly metal show on a radio channel, and promptly went out and bought the album. From there I went on to Metallica (Load era), Dream Theater and the like.

During my early years I didn`t listen to much music at all. At first, I was a computergeek who played games all day long, then I went on to become a Warhammergeek who spent a fortune on miniatures, paint and rulebooks. It was only when I turned 15 I began to develop the passion for music I have now
