Wasn't sure where to put this, but seemed most relevant either here or in practice room. Pretty neat:

That snare tone is crazy dry for my taste, but it sounds great on the album.

I agree on the snare being a bit dry in isolation but working really well on the album. It kind of makes sense though. The fast and constantly changing tempos of this sort of music work better in small clubs and small theaters. I bet if you put a fat sounding plate on that snare the mix would just turn to mud. I think I recall a bit from his creative live class about keying the room mics off of the shells and gating them so they worked in time with the music, which for this sort of stuff seems like a clever way to get some sense of space in the recording.

the whole thing sounds a little dry when you compare it to the album mix. im wondering how "finished" this is. probably a lot of things taken off of it. the snare does sound dry on the record but not as dry as this. it has a bit more body and decay than this isolated mix. still cool, nonetheless.

Yeah I wonder how exactly these were "isolated" or at what point in the process they're from. Is that scratch guitar? Or were these somehow taken from some stems?

This is most of the drum tracks for the songs from You Fail Me recorded at God City studio with just drums and a scratch guitar track (a deleted guitar track that doesn't appear on the album). "In Her Shadow" and "Hanging Moon" were done at a different studio so those aren't included. Sorry!

Oh ha ha I just listened from the embedded player. Didn't even think to check that. I'm sure there was plenty of mixing done for the final sound than what we hear here, but it's a great reference either way.
