Right, they invented it. :) I'm talking about the early Sabbath with Ozzy. The albums with Dio do sound trad metal to me, but not the Ozzy stuff. That's just me, if their early stuff sound traditional to you that's cool. I'm in no way putting Sabbath down, I love their music..... up until Dio left anyway.
Sabbath have had must've hadtheir hand in traditional metal, because they are arguably THE FIRST heavy metal band, so i think they've influenced trad metal bands definitley, but had a more direct influence in doom/stoner metal. The Ozzy stuff anyway. And some of the post-Dio stuff is good stuff! Born Again, The Eternal Idol, Headless Cross, Cross Purposes, they're good albums to me.

I agree with your post WC. I posted earlier that they are indeed the fathers of all things heavy, they were the first and VERY influential on the metal scene. But I think they had more influence on the doom/stoner scene than the traditional metal sound (still talking about the early Ozzy years here). You could almost look at them as being proto-metal in the same way that The MC5 and the Stooges and the New York Dolls were proto-punk. They all got the ball rolling with a million bands picking up on their idea and improving on it. Again I love Sabbath, they are VERY important in the history of metal, but in my opinion they are more doom/stoner than trad metal. Their albums with Dio I would consider VERY influential trad metal releases though.

Coming to those four:

1) Judas Priest
2) Iron Maiden
3) Dio
4) Ozzy

hmmm....a good way to put it. Much like how the Ramones, The Dead Boys and the other New York Punk bands as well as the British Punk bands took what The New York Dolls, The MC5, the Stooges and to a lesser extent The Velvet Underground and pushed it further and made it their own, evolved it, Sabbath got the ball rolling, as you say, and trad metal acts(Particularly Judas Priest, who i consider one of, if not THE first actual Traditional metal band) took what Sabbath was doing, but then made it their own, evolved it and added things, like more energy, at times, more intense riffage, and so on,thus creating what we call trad or classic metal. But in the end it ALL comes from Black Fucking Sabbath! The stoner/doom guys just took exactly what Sabbath did and made a carreer out of it.

 Very true!
Why do you think I love doom? :notworthy But not any kind, bands like Candlemass, Solitude Aeturnus, Thunderstorm, Well Of Souls, Memory Garden, Cathedral (with variations), Memento Mori, Krux, Last Chapter are absolutley influenciated by Black Sabbath riffs, melodies and spirit. I'm not into stoner or doom/sludge, I prefer that still bluesy-rocker feeling that BS had in the 70's (Ozzy) and the more powerful sound of the early 80's (Dio and Gillan). :worship:

Every time somedoby recommend me a doom band, first thing I asked is: sounds like Black Sabbath?, the rest comes naturally.

Agreed with the Wyv'!

Even if Dio would be my #2 if he had stopped with Sacred Heart ;)
Probably Fang we vote of the same basis. I counted good, average and bad albums up to day, plus influence in other bands. And definitively Judas win over Maiden by those factors, and them over Dio and Ozzy.

Especially without Black Sabbath, the choices were easier. And as for Dio, I also would have like him to stop at "Sacred Heart", those are the albums I follow him and then lost interest in his career. When I saw him live 2 years ago, it was cool, but neither his band or some of the songs had the slightest appeal in comparison to 'Holy Diver', 'Don't Talk To Strangers', 'Rainbow In The Dark', 'Last In Line', 'Egypt (the chains are on)', 'King of Rock'N'Roll' and 'We Rock'.

Definitely MAIDEN!!! Without a doubt! A band that can release four monster albums in a row and top it all off with probably the best traditional Metal live album must be deemed worthy of getting the top spot by me.
